Whale watching... Monteray Bay or Seattle

Trying to decide which place to go whale watching from... Monteray Bay have shorter trips, which might be good in case of sea sickness (but seems rougher)... Seattle on the other hand does longer trips (and likely to be calmer waters?) and looks beautiful... anyone experienced both...? recommendations appreciated

Hi we have only done Monterey and it was fantastic, reason being it's a short trip out to the main whale watching areas. This is why the bbc and other tv companies use this area because of the abundance of sea life. On our first trip we saw 11 humpbacks and lucky to se them feeding as well as one breaching, dolphins a some other smaller whales. The only thing we didn't see , orcas but it wasn't the best time of year for them. We went with sanctuary cruises from moss landing and if anybody suffers with motion sickness they hire out wrist bands to stop this.

We also did Monterey Bay and saw loads of whales. Sea for us wasn't rough at all just can get cold even in the summer. The trip for us was long enough.

Seattle, specifically San Juan Island if you can get there. It’s beautiful.

I highly recommend Maya’s Legacy for the whale watching. We had the BEST half day trip with them. They went out of their way to make sure we saw the Orcas.

We’re actually back there with them in September

We went with Sanctuary Cruises in Moss Landing, its right by the deep part of the ocean where the wales are and you can see them really close to the shore, so less travelling time to get out to where you see the whales.
We saw sea otters and sea lions in the harbour and followed a few humpbacks who were feeding out at sea, but we never went far out.

We went Whale Watching with Princess Monterey just last week and they were amazing. We saw 5 humpbacks up close and copious sea otters and sea lions. Their commentary were fantastic and not crowded like other boat companies we saw in the water that day. Would highly recommend

We did the trip out of Monteray 4 or 5 years ago .Loads of humpbacks , at at one time we were in the middle of an estimated 400 strong pod of dolphins

Also bear in mind it’s different whales in each place, San Juan Island and Seattle for example are predominantly Orca.

Is there one you would prefer to see over another?

Thanks for all the replies... We eventually decided on Seattle as we had more days there (and the possibility of sea sickness) ... it was fantastic! ... saw plenty of humpbacks, but unfortunately no Orcas... the afternoon trip after ours spotted 4 breeds of whales! ... Still the highlight of the trip (so far)
