I also find this confusing. Looking at a BA fly drive now and Avis have a Luxury/Group L Ford Expedition cheaper than a Large/Group Z Chevvy Tahoe. But which is the more desirable car assuming size and seats is not an issue?

From my understanding is that a premium SUV (Suburban L) is longer than a full size SUV (Tahoe Z).

When I last went in 2019, I rented a full size SUV. I got an 8 seater Expedition, but the boot was really small, only big enough to fit about 2 cases on their side on top of each other.

This time for my trip in 2022 I have gone for a premium suv, which will be longer so it has a bigger boot for cases etc. without needing to put the rear seats down. Why it's called premium & less expensive than a group Z, I'm not sure. But when I've been looking before it's usually the premium (L) which is much more expensive than the full size (Z) on almost all rental sites.

As far as Alamo are concerned, the Premium SUV’s tend to be the big brothers of the Full Size SUV’s. The Suburban is a longer version of the Tahoe, the Yukon XL is a longer version of the Yukon and the Expedition Max is a longer version of the Expedition. So similar in spec. but the Premium version is longer than its Full Size relation.
For more bells and whistles then there’s the Luxury SUV, like the Lincoln Navigator and the Escalade, these are similar in size to the Full Size SUV’s. I once had an Infiniti Q80 which was a Luxury according to Alamo, and was similar in size to a Tahoe.

This is what I was trying to say. You have articulated it much better than me

Does anyone know what Budget provide in the Premium SUV category?

I’m hoping for a Suburban or similar but can see me getting stuck with a Kia or something...

This was the same when I booked for Xmas months ago.
So I gladly too the Expedition.

We booked group L Chevy Suburban(now shown as Ford Expedition) or similar as it was showing cheaper than the Full size Tahoe we usually get. Hubby very pleased!

Our BA flights have been cancelled and changed a few times since then and I see the price of the rental increasing on the Avis Preferred app. It’s now over double what we paid! Absolutely silly money.
