The town council believes this helps keep the town alive and we have lots of lovely restaurants and shops.
However, we do have a train station with limited free parking but as the station prior to ours charges for parking the free car park is taken up for commuters in the week which is annoying for residents as hard to find a spot to just pop to shop.

I work for a council and the reason why many Council's have taken to generating extra income, such as charging for parking and collection of green waste, is because the government cap the increase in the annual council tax. It's a case of generating more income to maintain council services or cut services such as libraries. I'm not saying it's the way to run things but it is quite often the case of cutting services or generating more income.
I understand why councils are short of money but when shops close then they have lost the business rates, plus parking fees, if no one shops there. They appear to be very short sighted in trying to force people out of their cars. People will just shop online and the council will have even less money.

Paying for parking annoys me too.

Where we live there is no paid parking at all, there are a couple of car parks with a 2 hour time limit (still free though) but other than that you can park as long as you like for free so I am always surprised when I go elsewhere and you have to pay to park. It is a bit ridiculous that I am not used to it by now but it catches me off guard every time.

Normally after a day on the beach we’d go to the one in Frinton town centre and take it back to the green on the seafront, but if it’s busy then we’ll stop at Kirby Cross on the way home instead

I fully agree. I am ok with paying a nominal fee at say a country park, where the money goes towards the upkeep, but most does irk me. What irks me even more though is having to pay before I leave the car - having to guess how many hours I am going to be there. I must have paid for hours and hours of unused parking. Also finding it harder now that I have virtually gone cashless to find coins to pay

I think paying for hospital parking is an absolute insult. When my dad was in end of life care and then passed away my parking fee for being with him for his last few days was over £30. I couldn't have cared less at the time but for some people that would have been a lot of money.
Also the fact that doctors and nurses and other NHS staff have to pay those fees just REALLY riles me up.

I live in rural West Sussex we only have a village store so I have to drive out to do a 'big' shop, no charge to park at the supermarket but if I go into town for anything then I have to pay to park, the car park at west Wittering beach is £9 to park at the weekend or £8 on a weekday.

Some scary numbers on here .
We are seemingly very lucky that our Tesco allows 3 hours free parking ( no purchase necessary ) and it’s just a short walk into town , so never any need to pay to go shopping near me.
Equally all the main beaches on the Lancashire coast you can find a spot ( maybe with a bit of a walk ) just on street parking

Thankfully I can park on the works car park so no issues there either .

I wouldn’t be paying some of the prices quoted on here .
( blimey some of you have to pay £20 for fish and chips and parking ! )
