any tips for puppy biting?

We have had our puppy a week now and he’s 9 weeks old. The biting is getting worse and worse! I know he is in pain due to teething so we give him chew sticks, and toys but he just wants our hands and feet! The nibbling is ok but then he latched on hard and you have to prise his mouth open! Have tried saying ‘off’ in a stern voice and giving him a toy to chew on instead, and have tried yelping like a puppy but he doesn’t seem to listen! My boyfriend says to give him time, but he learned to sit in a day so it’s worrying me that he doesn’t listen to this! Any advice?

I think you need to be firm and consistent with your reactions. Never let pup chew/nibble on your hand, we have always done a loud yelp sound as this creates what the mother would do.

The yelp needs to be loud enough to shock and just be consistent. Pup should soon get the message x

Get a water squirter bottle, and just squirt the dogs muzzle when it bites...hopefully the shock will cure it.

Put a dog toy into its mouth - I have arm full of scars from recent bites. My puppy nephew is like a hairy crocodile

Freddie was like this - his teeth were like pins! We were recommended a chew called a Yaker - a Himalayan Yak Milk Dog Chew which is available in Pets at Home and I'm sure other stores would sell them too. They are great for teething dogs!

We were also recommended freezing some treats and toys to help with the teething.

Reaction wise - yep, a yelp is best!

Our new puppy is 10 weeks, and is into full nipping mode, we use kongs, little one with a smearing of peanut butter, and other toys. A yelp works best but I’ve also tried a short growl which seems very effective too…..she backs off briefly….doesn’t put her off trying again though…….it seems to go on for ages but really it’s only a few weeks…..Enjoy him being little x

He’s so cute when he’s cuddling up to me asleep and you wonder how something so cute can stress you out so much 🤣

He’s finished biting for the time being lol

I’m reading this with interest as my son and his family are to pick up their puppy next week. We will be looking after it 3 or 4 days a week. Need all the help I can get!

Another tip is to coat your hands with a spray of perfume. The taste will deter him from biting. And also put him on the floor. Sitting next to you is a privilege he has to earn. Any unwanted behaviour is ‘punished’ by being on the floor. And ignored.
