Lack of spectators in Japan

Will Japan still make money - or at least break even - from hosting the Olympics? I can't help feeling sad for them.

Imo it should have been pulled a long time ago! It's just not at its best.

I think tv rights pays much of the bills.

I do understand why you would say that, but I'm glad it went ahead. Some of the competitors have been questioned about the prospect of delaying again and have been very against it.

It must be hard to train for something and already have it postponed a year.

I was particularly struck by the gymnastics women's floor event earlier, where the silver went to the Italian woman, who is 30! Up against 16 year olds! She must have been upset about a year delay and be pleased it's gone ahead.

It's very sad, though, that there is no one watching live in the stadiums.

Most hosts don’t break even, let alone make profit, even with a normal non-covid games, let alone with what Tokyo have ended up with!

Read a few reports that most countries/cities bid to host the Olympics in the hope it will thrust them into the spotlight, boost their tourism etc and gain financially in the longer term.

There have been financial successes:
Barcelona was a winner; it hugely boosted their profile in the world.
LA was also a winner with much of the infrastructure already there so no need to build from scratch.

But the report says most host cities lose out:
It’s thought that the Athens games was a factor in the economic crash of Greece.
Montreal was still paying off their debts for decades.
I believe that London taxpayers will be paying the cost for years to come.
Rio made a loss.

There’s a thought that many cities/countries don’t bid to host with costs far outweighing gains and seeing most previous hosts making a loss.

I have wondered how much of it could have been done on home soil. Obviously football and hockey etc wouldn't work, but what about 100m sprint via zoom?

l would say they are going to lose massive amounts of money on these games

they say that by delaying the games a year cost and extra three billon dollars. and the fact that they had no ticket sales and no revenue from visitors staying in hotels and eating and drinking will lose the local area a lot of money

I have throughly enjoyed them and have not particularly noticed the lack if spectators. With other team members in the stands there has been a bit of atmosphere conveyed for the tv. I imagine the atmosphere in the stadium is quite muted though. Although if it’s anything like skating then athletes will be used to performing in empty arenas.

I hope Tokyo hasn’t suffered a huge loss but I can’t imagine they have made what they needed too.

I read an article last month regarding how much it was costing the organisers in ticket refunds, don't recall the exact amount but it was several hundred million pounds. However they're only refunding ticket face value so lots of buyers are finding out that agents' booking fees etc. aren't being returned (at times up to an extra 25% I think) and so various legal actions are now in course

I guess there will be varying opinions; Wiki suggests no net gain for London?
