Amazon’s drone delivery system crashes and burns

Looks like it’s dead in the water

Thanks for sharing. Having read it, I got the sense it wasn’t dead, but just that the work to get this going will now be done outside of UK. But I see some comments towards the end of the article suggesting it may never happen.

I always felt that the hardest bit of drone delivery would be the very last piece of the journey, and that’s what the article suggests. I still think they’ll persevere and perhaps start by offering the service to addresses where a drop off is easier (eg we live out in the stocks so less things for a drone to hit!)

I've always thought it would be an incredibly difficult and pointless thing to pursue. Getting a drone to carry a package to a specific address and then depositing the package safely outside where is wouldn't get damaged/wet/stolen/etc sounded almost impossible. And I don't see any real benefit over getting it delivered by a van.

I remember when I first saw it and thought it was an April Fool's joke. I still think it sounds like an April Fool's joke.

I fail to see how this could possible work! I too thought it was an April 1st Joke. What happens if you on holiday when your parcel is 'dropped' off to start with, can you ask for it to be delivered to any one of your neighbours who happen to be in - its pretty laughable surely !

But, as the first line of the article says "Well over 100 employees at Amazon Prime Air have lost their jobs". So I'm not sure why this is "good"?

Also worth remembering that this is Prime Air, that was developing a drone system. Amazon itself will still be carrying on as before and is generally unaffected.

Well, I'm assuming you request when the item is to be delivered. Maybe?

Not sure how it would work for people living in flats though. Or who didn't have a front or back garden. Or, basically, anyone who didn't have anywhere outside where they live for the item to be dropped. Would it just drop the item on the pavement outside your house or block of flats? Or on your roof?

I'm quite happy to have the item delivered the next day by a man in a van.

Why would you arrange for a parcel to be delivered while you’re on holiday?

I always saw the drone thing as working in conjunction with Amazon Locker in urban areas anyway
