Skiathos, Skopelos? Booked!
I quite fancy a bit of island hopping after watching A Place in the Sun.
Has anyone been to Skiathos or Skopelos? Or recommend another Greek island good as a base? Edited at 06:52 PM. |

Last year my friend who I met in Greece 27 years ago and I did our first island hopping trip. Flew from Gatwick to Athens taxi to Piraeus. Spent a night there which I was pleasantly surprised was really nice. Blue star ferry to Mykonos for 2 nights. Took another ferry on to Naxos for 4 nights then finally on to Santorini for the last 3 nights. We flew home from there. I did a mini trip report in here while I was there. We loved it so much we go again in June, different group of islands. Fly Stansted to Athens spebd 2 nights there this time. Grab the metro down to Piraeus ferry straight on to Spetses for 2 nights. Ferry to Poros Island for 5 nights. Day trip to Hydra from there. Ferry back to Piraeus and a night there. Flight back home from Athens the following day. Booked flights first with Ryanair all accommodation via booking.com and will book ferries with viva.gr but can buy them at the quay as long as not peak summer season. So much cheaper doing it ourselves. Been to a few places in Greece but not Skopelos of Skiathos. My Dad has and enjoyed both. Loved the sugar cube buildings of Mykonos, Santorini was sorry too busy and tacky in places but loved Pyrogos. Fell in love with Naxos. I've loved Corfu Rhodes Kos Zante & Parga. All very different.

Skopelos is significantly quieter than skiathos. Alonyssos is quieter again.
None of them are excessively touristy in the same way as some of the other islands are. Skiathos town is lovely very picturesque but can be quite a steep climb down. Lots of long thin beaches along the southern coastal road. Good bus links along the southern edge of the island. Family orientated I would say. Also more expensive than some islands. Partly food but also getting there. Seen as a more discerning island destination. Of the two I would personally book skiathos and visit skopelos for the day. But they are different and I would suggest a bit of research to decide which island you fancy... |

Ooh sounds lovely trip. I am a fan of the Saronic islands, hope you like them too. Very cosmopolitan, especially poros and hydra in comparison to some of the ones on your previous trip.
As an aside, if getting ferry not flying dolphin, I am fairly sure the spetses to pireaus ferry stops at Hydra a couple of times a day. You could see Hydra port easily for four five hours and then hop in the next ferry to Poros. It's hard to see a lot of the island in a day given no cars, unles you are speedy on a donkey? Could then go to Aegina and on to Agistri on your day trip from Poros. Or over to epidavros. I remember Hydra as being one of the hottest places I have ever experienced. I think because it is so barren and rocky/steep. Hydra port is in a smallish dip/bay and cooling wind doesn't seem to get there... Certainly when I have been there. So take lots of water... Or faint strategically beside one of the monster yachts and wait for a hunky italian / Greek millionaire to rescue you 😂 Edited at 10:14 PM. |

Thanks for that. I've booked Skiathos for 10 days at the end of May. Flights were £500+
Also booked a room with lovely views in Skiathos town. |

Have a look at The Greek Islands with Julia Bradbury on ITV’s catch up service from last week. She visited Skiathos and Skiopolis, it was stunning. Have a great holiday
