Virginia Road Trip

Hi we're hoping to spend Christmas in Virginia this year, our plan is to fly out around the 20th for 2 weeks into DC then drive along the skyline Drive to the Blueridge Mountains.
Thinking of renting a lodge around the Roanoke area for a few days over Christmas so that's only giving us a few days to drive there, would that be enough time to be able to stop and see places staying a night or 2 on the way, then spend the rest of the time driving back up to DC for the return flight stopping for a few days in certain areas!

We're looking to see some lovely scenery along the way.
Any places you think is a must even if its a slight detour.
Thanks

We drove from DC to to Roanoke then onto Nags Head on Outer Banks to Williamsburg and back up to DC. Took 2 weeks stopping at Front Royal for a night then at the National Park along the Skyline for 2 nights. There are great views and waterfalls along the Skyline and worth spending a couple of days walking some of the trails if you have time.
We then stopped in Roanoke for a night before crossing country to East coast and Nags Head stopped in place called Roanoke Rapids along the way before reaching our Airbnb in Nags Head for 4 nights. The Skyline is a beautiful drive but keep eye on weather as in Winter it can sometimes be closed due to bad weather.

I stayed at Wintergreen, in summer. Some nice breweries around that area. A lot of the area is extremely rural - people living in shacks, few shops etc outside the towns and cities. Some of it was a bit of an eye opener. Crabtree falls is nice, but not sure about in Winter. I’d be a bit concerned about the roads in Winter, although the Americans are much better at keeping them open than us.
We quite liked Charlottesville, despite its more recent bad press, the town centre is very nice. Shame about the riot, that wasn’t people from there but was triggered by the far right traveling there to oppose the removal of the confederate statues. It’s a University town.
