My first car was a Fiat 500 and I absolutely loved it! Granted it wasn't the fastest but was perfect what I needed (short journeys around town). If it wasn't for needing a huge boot to now transport all the stuff that comes along with having a toddler I wouldn't hesitate to get another one!

My son has a Hyundai i10 which is basically the same as a Kia picanto. Have a test in both of them as well. I’ve been seriously well impressed by it (1.2l model) and wouldn’t even rule it out as something for commuting for myself next time I come to change my car.

OP. There's is so much out there I would try and spend a few days trying out a load of makes/models. Only then start to narrow down the choice to 1 or 2 and go from there.
Best of luck as it's stressful!

I've gone from a grand Cherokee to an Aygo and love it for in town driving it's done a couple of long journeys too it's nippy as well
Takes 2 Jolie spin car seats for the grand kids fine a buggy that folds small in the boot or our french bulldogs grate in the boot
Visablity is good for both me at 5ft anfpd DH at 6foot our driving positions are very different
DH bought himself a pick,up but apart from going to the golf the clubs electric trolley and all his crap just don't go in
Uses mine more than his it's great for the nursery run due to parking
Fits in the garage and still leaves room for all the junk we store in there
I drive the pick up more than he does as I've got all the dogs the double buggy car seats etc most of the time

I had a mini cooper s until a few months ago. Not sure what age you'd get for the money but a fast, sturdy car, loved it. Only sold it as we needed a bigger car with 4 doors.

Had a Fiat 500 as a hire car and hated it - it was like driving in a tiny tin box (I had to drive on the m62 and was petrified).
Our Toyota Yaris has just died so we are also on the hunt for a new car - our eldest will start learning to drive next year so we are thinking of something safe and cheap to insure - so either another Yaris or a polo 1.0 I think - as new as possible x

You mention an Aygo above - I can certainly recommend this or a Peugeot 108 which my DD has. Mine is perfect for town driving and only has a 1.0l engine (no tax), Rosie’s Peugeot is a 1.2l and is a bit nippier at the lights and great for her 20 mile commute.

I had a Fiat 500 for a couple of hours when one car was in for a service ... I thought it was cute and funky but lacked substance.

We will be sticking with Toyota and Peugeot - both cars have been fab value for money 😀

My dd has a mint green 2018 one and absolutely adores it but she is 24, and it's a hit with her pupils in class.
I think it's a great wee car and inside it doesn't feel basic.
She often has 4 people in car with her friends.

I'm currently on my 4th fiat 500, albeit my latest one is the Abarth 595 version and I love them.
I tend to mainly drive locally with the odd motorway thrown in. They are not the fastest cars out there but they are easy to park, cheap to run and come in a range of funky colours.
I had the 1.2 lounge versions previously and they were nippy enough for me however I did notice a massive difference when I moved to the Abarth. It's like a little rocket but the only downside is that I get a lot of young lads wanting to race me at the lights.
As a 43 year old police officer it's not happening 😀
