South Africa - safaris etc
My friend and I are heading to South Africa in August/September this year and I need some help planning!
We are two girls going together and as such I’m a little wary or safety - any tips you can give me? I feel okay going to super touristy areas and don’t plan to rent a car but is there anywhere we definitely shouldn’t wander into? Is it really as bad as everyone says? We’re planning to spend 3/4 weeks in Southern Africa staring in South Africa and we’d like to do a safari and see the Victoria falls/devils pool. If we were to visit another country on the trip which one would you recommend? In terms of safaris - what’s the best option? I’ve been googling for a few days but there’s just so many options I need advice or what you liked and didn’t like. Ideally I’d like a private tour and lodge but I know these could be expensive. I’ve looked at one and for 2 nights and two people food drinks and private tour is $2500 Canadian which I think is great! But I’m really not sure how to go about booking? I wanted to do Kruger National Park but have seen many other private game reserves too. What else do you recommend doing in South Africa? By recommended tours? Thanks!

DS23 and I did our second trip to south Africa last August, I've posted most of my trip report 'deserts and daisies ' and I did a trip report for our first trip in 2017, we did Cape town, Kruger , Kwazulu natal that time. I never felt unsafe on either trip. Both times we hired a car. We did self drive in Kruger for 7 nights and had 2 nights at a lodge in Kwazulu natal, very nice, but I preferred self drive. That $2500 isn't just for 2 nights is it? If so, that's expensive! Our 2 nights at Rhino river lodge for 4 people was around £900.

Oh right I thought it was an okay price haha it’s not a self drive tour I’m not sure if that’s any difference. I’ve no idea what safaris cost just imagined them to be very expensive! Will have a look at your trip reports thanks!

All lodges will include meals and game drives in their own vehicles. We were lucky at rhino river in that our first drive there was just us and one couple, our next 3 drives were just the 4 of us.
Self driving around Kruger will be the cheapest option. You stay in Sanparks accommodation ranging from basic with communal bathrooms and kitchens, to comfortable with own kitchen, bathroom and sometimes TV for £80 per night for 2 . You can book game drives if you want a break from driving, or you want to go out after the camp gates close. You can self cater or eat in the park restaurants. Accommodation must be booked through the Sanparks website, you may be too late for this year, the popular camps can get booked up 11 months in advance.
