Heartbreaking and an 8 year old boy has died. Nature can be very cruel.

Latest from the weather channelweather/storms/hurricane...carolina-north

Dorian made its first landfall on Elbow Cay, in the Abacos of the northwestern Bahamas, at 12:40 p.m. EDT Sunday. It then made a second landfall on Great Abaco Island near Marsh Harbour at 2 p.m. EDT Sunday. Dorian's third landfall occurred on the eastern end of Grand Bahama Island about 11 p.m. EDT Sunday night.

Maximum sustained winds topped out at 185 mph on Sunday, putting Dorian in a tie for the second-highest sustained wind speed among all Atlantic hurricanes.

It also tied the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane in the Florida Keys as the strongest landfalling hurricane in the Atlantic Basin.

At a Glance
Dorian is pounding the northwestern Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane.

A life-threatening storm surge of up to 23 feet is possible there.

Wind gusts over 200 mph are possible in parts of the northwestern Bahamas.

A hurricane warning and a storm surge warning have been issued for a part of Florida's east coast.

Dorian is a threat for the Southeast from Florida to North Carolina this week.

What part of the coast experiences hurricane conditions remains uncertain and is dependent on the exact track.

Residents along the Southeast coast should have their hurricane plans ready and monitor Dorian closely.

High winds. But 23ft storm surge potential on top of a king tide. Yikes!

I'm wondering does the fact it has now slowed make it more likely it will dissipate or reduce in strength as the slowing down means more power in the storm is "used up" ? Physics was never my strongest subject at school.

Hurricanes feed on heat. As long as the ocean is hot enough, they'll build strength (that's the resaon why they quickly die down when they make landfall ... because they can no longer feed on heat from the water)

slowing down may or may not indicate they reduce in strength, but that's not the issue here. The main concern is the damage and devastation they deal

when a storm slows down, it means it stays at the same place for a longer period of time.
so, the longer it stays in one place, the more damage it does.
If it slows down by a factor 2, it means hurricane force winds will beat the place up 2 times longer

so, it's not a matter of strength there.
the main issue is how long it deals damage to the same area.

and remember that, as soon as it reaches a hotter pocket of water, it builds strength again
the power of a hurricane is not in the hurricane itself, it's the water underneath it.
It does not have a "power" like it had it's own tank of petrol and when used up, it stalls and dies down
the hurricane has a virtually unlimited fuel reserve : the ocean. The hotter the water, the stronger the hurricane
and, as the hurricane moves on ... it comes upon new feeding grounds, if you see what I mean

the only real way for a hurricane to die off, is to make landfall, or come across waters that are too cold to sustain it.

I suspect when it heads up the florida coast that the prediction of it dropping to a Cat 3 will likely change again as it'll pull more power once it's over water again.

The latest update doesn't seem to show it turning quite so sharply as before so catching more of the Florida panhandle.

There are some videos coming through from Grand Bahama which are just totally heartbreaking - people having to take shelter in their attics with the waves licking up through the roof edge, Freeport Int airport under 4/5 feet of water or more and so many houses destroyed.

We can only pray that this hurricane starts to move away from the island to give the people some relief and hope it does turn away from Florida.

We can only watch and wait and stay safe those of you travelling or who are already there.
