I agree, yes. I had to do it when I was at school. If you had a business meeting with someone or an interview then you would stand to greet them. Just teaches basic good manners and a lot of kids don’t get taught this at home because their parents have none.

It’s a relic of post-war education- training little kids to be good soldiers in the event of another conscription! Totally unnecessary.

I’m a teacher and no I wouldn’t expect this as teachers are in and out of other teachers rooms and it would disrupt the learning.
I’ve taught for over 20 years and it’s never been a thing in the schools I’m in.
We were talking about it the other day and apparently where I am it used to happen then just for the head, but I’ve been there 2 years and have never asked them to do it.

I voted no. I think it’s outdated and unnecessary. There are plenty of other ways to respect teachers.

Yes - when we have a very senior (VVIP) coming to visit our office we are still expected to stand - it’s a mix of courtesy and respect (and I still always stand when’s women enters my space or leave & returns to a dining table in a restaurant) my parents instilled respect into me and as such i like to see it in others too - it makes life a much happier place (IMOl

I think it’s going a step too far, but I do feel children need to have more respect for teachers. However, I don’t see how standing when they enter a room achieves this. In fact, it could even bring more disrespect and disruption to many classrooms when badly behaved pupils refuse to follow the rules and confront teachers.

I don’t have the answer to how respect can be brought back. I suppose the simple answer is parents instilling more respect at home for teachers, but I’m sure the reality is far more complex 😔

No, i wouldn't want my staff to stand up if I came in the room

If the teacher was sat down and a pupil came in the room for some reason, would the teacher be expected to stand up ?

No, society including business has moved on from this heiraxhical way.

You respect people for who they are, not rank.

It still exists in some cultures but not western Europe.

Sorry I disagree - nothing to do with soldiery - respect and manners - probably when children had respect for teachers, policemen and their parents. Sadly gone now at least for the first two mentioned.
