The total mileage for that vacation over 14 days was 1120.
That included a return trip to Mobile, Alabama and all journeys within Orlando.
People think nothing of a 3 hour drive to a beach and back in a day (260 miles or more). Our longest day took up well over a third of our total. Destin to Tampa was over 420 miles!

We weighed this off against the fact that when in Orlando we..
1. Always visit BG (145 miles return)
2. Always visit at least 1 decent beach, often Casperson (270 miles return).
3. Part of the miles was to visit Daytona beach for the day (we only had to drive out and not return).

Suddenly the mileage looks very reasonable.. and with no Tolls away from Orlando as I seem to remember.

Highlights..
USS Alabama State Park.
A day at Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum.
2 nights at Margaritaville, Pensacola Beach. Awesome beach.
2 nights in Destin next to Henderson State Park. Awesome beach.
Elgin AFB Armaments museum.
The long drive.
A meal in a Casino (Hardrock Tampa)
Busch Gardens at Rope drop with no return journey from Orlando.
10 nights in Orlando.
A day at the very interesting Daytona Beach prior to an evening flight.

It was certainly a great departure from the standard Orlando vacation.

To put that mileage in perspective, we clocked up more than staying (!) at Cape Coral last year which included two 150 mile journeys from and back to Miami airport. Your trip now sounds like a bargain.

That certainly sounds like it's worth doing. Not sure about dragging the kids along but I can see me and Ms McFluff enjoying that kind of road trip. I have had a good look at Busch Gardens and that might end up on our list.

Without a doubt you need to visit Anna Maria Island at least once in your life, my favourite place on Earth!

This year however we are (fingers crossed) finishing our holiday up in the Panhandle of Florida for our final week. We haven't yet booked accommodation but have seen some very nice beach condos on the 30A section of Santa Rosa Beach. Whilst here we'll do an overnight trip to New Orleans as it's not a million miles away and somewhere I've always wanted to visit

Yes Anna Maria Island does look nice. I wonder if we could visit on the way up to Orlando. Naples, Anna Maria Island, Orlando, Home... sounds like it could work.

I’ll probably get roasted for saying this, but we did the drive up to St Augustine and to be honest found it very disappointing.
There’s no doubting the history but the shops were poor and expensive. Overall not worth the long drive from Orlando.
We drove back down the coast which was more enjoyable.

You need to throw Siesta Key beach in there too, just for comparison purposes
