Absolutely agree 100%. I doubt those people saying they would have kept quiet would have been happy if they been overcharged.

You snooze you lose. I wouldn’t have told them and I bet loads wouldn’t either but are too scared to say on here!

10 days ago I had a coving delivery. I ordered 6 lengths but they delivered 10. No way was I bothering with contacting the Builders Merchant
Instead I snapped the extras up and slung them in the skip.

By the way it was GTEC stuff so a lot more than the OPs meal.

You did the right thing OP, somebody somewhere has to pay and I feel once you know you are getting it without being charged it’s effectively theft. Everyone makes mistakes and they will be grateful you pointed theirs out

I would have said nothing

I’m with Tom , suspect either people not telling the truth that they would ignore it , or possibly more likely that those who would say nothing have just kept quiet for ‘ fear’ of appearing mean

I’m from up North , I don’t care 😀

I also wouldn’t have said anything
In fact a few months back I went to a local express supermarket. I love the iced lattes you but and they are usually about £1.85 but they were on offer at £1 so I picked up the tray of 10 and took it to the checkout, the woman counted them, scanned 1 and then carried on. It was only when she said the amount I realised she hadn’t put x 10 in after scanning the coffee! I was willing dh not to realise 🙈
But by the same token on New Years Eve DH and I went to a restaurant. Dh wasn’t happy - his beer was warm and his garlic bread cold. He mentioned the beer after he drank it asking if the next one could either be cold or if not could he have ice but he wasn’t going to mention the garlic bread. I did though and they took it away and took quite a while bringing it back - it came back hot but was completely the wrong garlic bread 🙄. He didn’t say anything just ate it but then the waitress came over and apologised for the incorrect item and also the delay replacing it and said it would be knocked off the bill. It wasn’t!
There were 2 of us and the restaurant wasn’t busy at all so there actually wasn’t any excuses but we didn’t say anything he just paid the bill and we left.

I’m from up North too but I do care. I couldn’t have it in my conscience that I’d knowingly taken something

What an interesting set of responses I’ve had, what nobody has specifically picked up and I thought someone might, was the fact it was a local hotel - family run and not a huge chain or as someone else mentioned a national supermarket chain, maybe it doesn’t make a difference? Maybe if I had been in a different town at a Brewers Fayre attached to a PI my response would have been different but I don’t think so, a few years back at Disney’s Yacht Club they forgot to charge us for a round of drinks at the bar, DH went and told them, again the CM was very grateful and thanked us profusely x

Many years ago in Wales we were undercharged at a cafe and told the waitress when we got to the till to pay. Unfortunatley the owner overheard and immediately tore into the waitress in front of us which was very awkward for us and her. If we had known he was going to be so nasty we would have kept quiet in that instance.

Tom why you would do that? One phonecall to give them the option to collect it. If they couldn't be bothered then fine but I genuinely don't understand. (And if they'd said they didn't want it I'd have had it on eBay).

Hmm I’m not sure if I’d notice, but if I did I’m not sure what I’d do. I’d definitely keep quiet at a chain or a supermarket. Though if I notice they hadn’t scanned something at a supermarket then I suppose it’s still stealing, so therefore it’s stealing at the restaurant too... I’d feel worse that it was an independent restaurant but still not sure that I’d say anything...
