Touring Florida

Hi, 4 of us are touring Florida in November. We’re visiting South Beach in Miami, the Keyes, Homestead, driving through the Everglades, Naples, Gainesville, St Augustine, Daytona, St Petes and Tampa.

Can anyone give us some ideas what to see, preferably off the beaten track, no theme parks, anything quirky.
Thanks.

Firstly, Daytona seems out of sinc with the rest of your route.

The Keys.
As you approach 7 mile bridge going South, you will see a car park. If you pull over you can then go down and onto the old 7 mile bridge, that is now a footpath. You will probably see lots of iguanas, then from the old bridge, spectacular views. When you turn round and get back , there is a lovely restaurant under the bridge parapet that does good cocktails.
In Key West, Mel Fishers shipwreck museum is very good, containing the treasure of the Atocha (have a google) .

Everglades, Tamiami Causeway. About 10 miles in from Miami Int, you will come upon Buffalo Tigers Airboat rides. It is nothing like the sanitised versions to be found around Orlando. It is run by Native American Indians and you get REAL close to the Alligators. You also visit the original swampland Island home of Mr Tiger (now deceased). I have been on plenty of airboat rides and this kicks the rest into the long grass.

Naples
Delnor Wiggins State Park. In our couple of hours, we swam, got real close to Pelicans, found turtle nests (active and hatched), Wild Tortoises, Snake (non venomous) and a Manatee. Admission for a car ... $6

Near Venice.
Casperson Beach. If you take a sieve, you will find fossilised sharks teeth in the gravel/sand. Beautiful, quiet, unspoilt and with a boardwalk. Sharks by the pier is nearby to the North.

Tampa.
Fort De Soto Park. South of St Petersburg, beautiful sand, great wildlife and unspoilt.

North and inland of Tampa.
Rainbow River at Dunellon. Kayak or drift down a Chrystal Clear natural spring. Refreshing , relaxing and beautiful. You will see turtles. You will see birds. You may see Otters. It is awesome.

Daytona Beach.
The promenade with its detail of motor racing history and its incredible speedway.

Titusville.
The Valiant Air Command Museum. A very good collection of aircraft from WW2 onwards in a very ‘hands on’ active museum with some live aircraft.

Polk City (near Orlando.Kermit Weekes Fantasy of Flight).

That will give you some to be getting on with.. and if you are really adventurous, then look at..

Destin with its leisure boating at Crab Island.. which has no Island.. or Crabs (Google it).

Pensacola with the third best aviation museum in the United States (I have also been to both Smithsonians on the Mall and at Dulles) also, the USAF Museum at Dayton Ohio. Definitely third with Dayton at no1 by a million miles.

The Shark Valley tram tour in the Everglades off the Tamiami Trail is worth a visit.
