Updates on Situation in Ireland

Friday 13th March
I was chatting to my Mum just now (in the UK) and we were talking about the different response between the UK and Ireland, how it felt here at the moment etc. I thought others might be interested to keep up to date with how things are being handled here in comparison to UK. Please, if this makes you more anxious - stop reading x
Firstly, the Irish government seem to be acting a lot quicker than the UK government but I think it comes down to the numbers per population. We have many more cases per 1million of our population compared to the UK and I think that is possibly a key decider rather than the number of cases on their own.
Anyway as things stand here right now - as of yesterday we had 70 cases. A number of these were by community transmission and a number were found in our hospitals!
On Tuesday the St Patrick’s Day parades had been cancelled nationally. But we were all carrying on pretty much as normal on Wednesday - washing our hands, using “respiratory etiquette” as our Taoiseach says. But then things started to change closer to home.
I had a message from my son’s secondary school in the morning saying they were hoping to send contingency planning notes home by the weekend for if they had to close. My daughter’s dance competition at the weekend was then postponed. Then by around lunchtime, to my great relief by this time, Dublin Comic Con for Saturday and Sunday was postponed. This was followed by another message from my son’s school saying they all had to take a mobile phone or laptop in the next day (Thursday) with apps downloaded so they could get everyone organised for school closure - just in case
The next day (Thursday) again we all carried on as normal, fully expecting schools to close some time before Easter holidays, but maybe by Friday as we have a long weekend and schools were closed Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th anyway for St Patrick’s Day. The news from America was that Trump had announced the travel ban on some European countries so things felt a bit ominous. I went off to the beautician to get my nails done and then I was heading to Tesco.
As I entered and sat down there was a lady having her hair done who said there was an announcement due from Leo Varadkar at 11am. We knew this was serious as he was in Washington - we thought it would be schools closing, we assumed from Friday - the next day.
We all agreed we’d like to watch the announcement so the owner got her ipad and found rte news. Then the announcement was delayed for half an hour
At 11.30am, as I sat having my nails done I remember thinking how surreal it was sat watching this whilst supposed to be relaxing! Anyway, then it really did get serious. They announced from 6pm that night all schools, colleges, and childcare facilities were to close until 29th March and there were to be indoor gatherings of more than 100 people and outdoor of more than 500 and there was to be “social distancing”! Oh my God! Just like that, life changed!
We turned off the ipad, chatted a little bit about what it meant and how difficult it was going to be with childcare stopped and joked that Tesco would be busy.
I headed to Tesco and as I turned into the car park thought “that is not good!” It was busier than I’ve ever seen it! Even at Christmas. There were people wandering round who had obviously not been in a supermarket for a long time - probably had a phonecall from their other half and told to get “stuff”. Some shelves were empty, the surprising one was the sugar! The not so surprising was the beer! It took two hours to do that shop! I normally take an hour at most to do a big shop.
Next issue was to pick up the youngest from primary school. The kids came out mostly beaming! My daughter was just worried about her birthday party with the whole class next weekend at the swimming pool. I reassured her I’d rang and confirmed before collecting her. Then I collected my son and neighbours son from Secondary school - it was weird seeing them all teaming out with absolute armfuls of books! I then spent the car journey home reassuring them that this was a good thing, it was to try to delay the virus and that if any of us got it that we’d probably be fine but we had to look out for the vulnerable in our society!
Since then we’ve had libraries, after school activities, playgrounds, leisure centres etc shut. Every restaurant in the country has issued reassurance to their customers that they’re sanitising everything in sight on a regular basis and have reduced the number of tables to meet “social distancing” rules. We now know that this means we should stay one metre apart! Weightwatchers, running clubs, play centres and a number of other businesses have closed. I had to tell my daughter this morning that her party was cancelled! They’re now advising us to keep our kids apart from their school friends and not to let them socialise as they are vectors for the virus! We’re also advised not to let them visit their grandparents! They’ve even cancelled masses!
It’s a very strange, ominous feeling as I’m trying hard to reassure the kids that all will be ok but I don’t really know when it will be! My daughter has asked what we are doing for the next few weeks - I’ve had to tell her our current plans are for tomorrow and Sunday and that we can’t really plan after that.
We’re supposed to be going to Dublin tomorrow Confirmation dress shopping! I don’t want to cancel it as I feel we’ve taken so much away from her! At the moment we are still going - albeit on a much shorter trip! We’ve just had to have a family meeting about it though as our teenage son just came in and said he didn’t want to go (he was going to the comic book shops with his Dad)! He had heard that our cases here have doubled in 36 hours (I’ve since found out he’d got this wrong!) and he doesn’t want to take the risk. We’ve asked if he’s ok for us to go and the risk of us bringing it home and he said yes it’s just that he wasn’t that bothered about going so just doesn’t see the point now.
So that’s where we are today! There’s rumours the army and police have been told to be ready to be deployed from Monday! We don’t know why - the government are playing it down and saying it’s nothing to worry about. The HSE (our health service) have been told to prepare up to 10,000 beds!
I’ll try to keep you all posted how this goes. But as I said at the beginning, if this isn’t helpful then please don’t read. I just thought it might be helpful to some. Keep safe everyone x

Nice summary

Mini marathon postponed till autumn (was due to take place 31st May/ June bank holiday weekend). Universities/ colleges delivering classes online until end of term. I think the schools will be closed till well after Easter.

Sorry to hear about your daughter's party. When is she due to make her confirmation?

Austrian Government made similar comments re children. No schools and children aren't to be minded by grandparents

Thanks for the update. The UK and Ireland's response is so drastically different.

Thanks Floridadreams. I’m thinking it must feel a bit surreal? We are in Wales and the virus is low key but fairly close in towns around us. I mostly feel immersed in all of this and think I have it all worked out then every now and then I have a panic attack at the thought of it and what could happen. Please keep us updated on how things unfold - good or bad I’d rather be prepared for the reality of it.

Yes forgot about mini Marathon as that didn’t affect me My daughter’s confirmation is 1st May! I’m not hopeful but we have to carry on as if it is at the moment! Me and her best friends mum just keep joking that they might just end up with nice dresses!

I truly think we will - this is changing by the minute but from since I posted to now I’m more convinced!

It really does feel surreal! I’m dreading Dublin tomorrow - I think it will be eerie! But the shops and restaurants are opening (and struggling economically), they’ve now backtracked and said children can play together but only in small groups, and we might be on complete lockdown on Monday so this could be our last day out!
I know what you mean about the panic attacks. Glad this might help in some way. I will try to keep this updated as much as possible.

It's escalated a lot over a few days
Only mentioned mini marathon as I was initially surprised they were postponing an event scheduled for the end of May now. Looks like a tough few weeks ahead
