Second trip - DVC question (and others)
Hi
We had a first trip in December 2015. We were adamant before we went that we wouldn't go again...you can guess what happened. Planning a second trip in February/March next year. There will be 4 adults, our two children are grown up (18 and 25 when we go). It will be the oldest ones first time as she was working abroad on our last trip. The benefits of the second trip mean that we could see the things we would do differently and we'd like to stay at least part of the time on-site. We'll wait until free DDP starts but were wondering if we book two rooms in a moderate or a 2 bed at SSR or OKW - anyone think of advantages of one over the other? So, how do you buy DVC points and why would I do this rather than book directly? Presumably, I would I loose free DDP too? We are completely flexible on dates, no schools to consider so could literally go anytime at all Thank you |

Buying DVC points is buying into Disney's timeshare which I dont think you mean. I think you mean renting DVC points - you can do this directly via a DVC member or there are a few agencies out there.
Renting DVC points can save money on the accommodation but you dont get free DDP. If you are all staying OKW/SSR then the free DDP may be more cost effective. You would need to do the sums once its released. Only you would know your family so the OkW or moderate question is a hard one to answer. Personally at 25 I couldnt share with my parents, I would have need my own room but your family may be comfortable sharing. It also depends what you would get at OKW - Studio, 1 Bed?

Thanks for the quick response
Yes, I do mean renting. We are only looking at 5 nights on site so if we booked two rooms then she would share with me (son would share with dad) which we could manage for that length of time. |

DVC would be a good choice because you could get a 1 bed and all be in the same suite with a full kitchen, living room, washer and dryer. The rooms at OKW are huge in particular. Remember there is no such thing as 'free' dining plan- you will normally pay more for the room. Best thing to do is see how much it would cost booking direct with Disney (with or without 'free' dining plan, but you will have to wait until that offer is out again to assess the cost of that as rooms will be more expensive than if you look now without the free dining) and work out how many points you'll need and the cost if you were renting, which you can do now on Davids calculator on his website (excellent tool) and then add on dining. I do have to say though unless you are very big eaters, will always have the snacks, always have the desserts and always eat the most expensive stuff on the menus, with the exchange rate as it is you are better off paying out of pocket for meals than paying for the dining plan. I am a pretty big eater, with a wife and 2 kids over 10, and there is a calculator online where you can input your eating and drinking preferences (google it) and I would save roughly $500 a week by NOT taking the dining plan.
