Exactly. Refuse the debit on the basis that you have the zero receipt and that Avis haven’t given you the info you have requested in your email.

We are due to hand our car back at Miami next week and wondered when we hand the car back at the airport will the guy give me a receipt stating zero, we’ve had that with Alamo but not rented with avis before and want to make sure my backs covered as there was a dent and scratch i shown to the lady at the gate before we drove off and she said it’s nothing to worry about as its minor but don’t want any comeback!

Never a comeback in the States with any bump. Even if you take it back in a skip!
The beauty of a zero excess.

As always my advice is double check all paperwork and don't leave the garage until you are happy be that arrival or departure day.

As Tom knows I can vouch for that. My hire car went back to Alamo on the back of a wrecker truck in a few pieces. Passenger side front suspension, wheel etc ripped right off. Front of car twisted. One phone call to Alamo a replacement car within an hour and a half and nothing else ever said about it, and no invoice.

What insurances / type of booking do you take out? I have only ever done fly drive with maximum insurance cover and it’s costs me a F o r t u n e... but I am a worrier and have heard some horror stories about people getting charges on their cc on return for damage they don’t believe they did and can’t now prove they didn’t. Also don’t want to be charges £££ for someone scratching it in the car park or something or actually having an accident ...

Any tips as only want a car for a few days next year from Fort Lauderdale after a cruise drop off MCO. So don’t think flydrive is going to be cheapest option especially when I add all the extras

Sorry I've left it a while to reply I've been waiting for the emails to come to a conclusion. Avis have refunded the fuel charge as i indeed had the rip off part of the rental agreement which you are supposed to hand over at the barrier. The £36 charge was refunded to my card. The remaining charges were for "Roadside Safety Net". When questioned they assured me that i had agreed to it however when pushed they could provide no evidence but were unwilling to budge. I have another BA flydrive booked for the end of September (this was my 1st time using Avis). I am now a much wiser bunny and will be staying put at the barrier until I'm satisfied there's no nasty extra's.
Lesson learned!

The trouble with a lot of fly drives with some companies like Virgin the car has basic Insurance cover and then they charge you extortionate rates to upgrade.
It is best to book a car separate unless you are booking flydrive with a company that offer fully inclusive insurance package in the price BA do this.

In some cases with a fly drive it is cheaper to not collect the car and then hire a car separate, the extra cost of the insurance on the included car can work out more than doing a separate rental with included insurance.

I have rented BA Avis the last 4 years.
Last year I used a mixture of cash booths at tolls (and there were lots all over NE USA) but some roads do not have cash option, and I am quite satisfied the toll charges I had were fair and accurate - it's hard to keep track.
However I did have a strange amount - which when queried they said was an exchange rate adjustment- but refunded when I queried it.

However - I got no Avios - queried and was told if discount code is applied - you get no Avios.
I have just booked again for this Sept - and see Avis Preferred is automatically added now, but my booking shows "discount applied" so I think I'll check with BA if I still get Avios.

The only time I had a problem was MCO in 2017 - when I was supposed to get a tahoe and they had none, and got a 7 seat van. Avis were not great, so I used BA for my complaint and they were fantastic.

My other pickups have been SFO/LAX and BWI. I have had puncture and a couple of minor car faults - cars changed no problem.
