Dollar rate today is $1.30.

Yes, $1.60 we got in 2015 and not seen that rate since the referendum

Also bear in mind that sites like a Homeaway don’t even do any checks to see if the villa is owned by the person who says they own it! All they check is that the person placing the advert is the name on the bank account listed!

The exchange rate is certainly part of the issue, but as OPs say booking direct with an Owner can certainly be price advantageous.

One other thing that I have noticed with HomeAway (other than their fees going up) is that many of the listings for Orlando are now what appears to be Management Companies rather than the owner. As a result I'm sure that the price is inflated.

The key is to book direct with an owner and also I have found if you book with an owner who lives in the US they tend to add extra fees for cleaning and other stuff.
Sites like Home and away stuff you with all kind of fees.
The villa we have booked for this year I found on Home and away, I messaged the owner to get availability and also asked if they had there own web site.
Unfortunately they are not allowed to give you there web site via the Home and away mail service ( obviously to prevent of site bookings ) the owner hinted how to find there site which I did and booked via that, it was around £300 per week cheaper doing this.
The owner was quite pleased that I wanted to do it this way, I suppose guests have more respect for the owner when they get a home at a reasonable rate. Paying over would make you feel ripped off. ( And you are being ripped off but not by the owner but by these agent sites )
I would not of paid the rate on Home and away as I am familiar with prices.

As for villa rates increasing over the years, I do not agree I find they are more or less the same price as they were 5 years ago give or take £50 - £100 per week increase which is about right for owners to fill the price increases they incur for Electric and other costs they have to run there homes.

You'll pay a premium for the likes of homeaway.

We booked an Emerald Island villa in July for 19 nights.
There was a $220 service charge which I assumed was the homeaway fee.

4 bed villa was £2500 as reference.
