Avis and a surprise on my Credit card bill
After getting back from a weeks break in Fort Lauderdale with a BA flydrive i seem to have been charged over £50. I cant see what for the car was full on return and i didn't take any extras as all i needed was included. I emailed Avis 10 days ago and still haven't heard anything. I included a scan of the pickup documentation and the return showing why i was querying the charge. Is it common practice for Avis to add to a fully inclusive hire agreement? Having always used Alamo for the past 20 years i was apprehensive but the price was so good i couldn't refuse.
Anybody got any experiences of this? |

I suppose the obvious question is did you drive through any Sunpass tolls without stopping to pay cash? If you did for instance on day one of your holiday you'll immediately pick up an admin fee of $19.75 (with Avis you pay an admin fee of $3.95 per RENTAL day up to a maximum of $19.75. That's still only around £15 though and a long way short of £50. Unless you drove through a few dozen tolls.
That's all I can suggest though. Mick

No tolls, we were in Delray beach and set sat nav to avoid toll roads as I've read on here that Avis charge considerably more than Alamo for tolls. I'm sure they'll email me an explanation and hopefully a refund. I can't really complain as we only paid £330 each for the package (it might be a way of getting some money back as a change from airline surcharges! )

ppi might fit into that if on and not declined, but your receipt on return would have said $50. ($50/14 gives 3.57 a day). Seems to low for speeding

What does your Avis receipt show - avis/en/reservation/get-e-receipt
If you can also let us know what the original collection time was and the time the vehicle was checked back in. Edited at 10:57 PM. |

I had 2 charges on returning from my last trip with BA and Avis, £19 for alleged unpaid toll and £124 with no exclamation for what it was. I had the receipt for the cash we paid from the one and only Toll we used and the final document from when we dropped the car off at MCO showing zero balance, to cut a very long story short as they take at least 3 weeks to respond to each email and they just repeated it was for the outstanding balance owed to which I replied that it was a flydrive package with costs covered by BA, I did eventually get a full refund but it took me 5 months of constantly emailing and phoning. So please do not give up, I know it is frustrating but they can't be allowed to get away with this.

I must admit my experience with AVIS (over the last 2 years - last time AUg 18) is you get billed for the tolls regardless of going through the cash lanes, so a receipt is a must. I assume this is not AVIS, but the toll people passing number plates on for all lanes regardless of if paid manually. Seems someone has a nice earner out of this. Not sure if it is AVIS or the toll company.

The £124 looks like a moving violation ( jumping a red light, not stopping 100% on a stop sign etc. That is a $158 fine plus an admin charge by the rental company. A possibility I’d say. My son got one via Alamo . At least they explained it and send a link to show the picture of the violation. It was a “ fair cop” in his case. It was an overhead traffic light he didn’t see til last minute so he stopped well past the line!

Think it might be for a tank of fuel that's the only thing i can think of. I still have the tear off slip which you hand over if you want to pre-pay for it though.

Dispute the charges with the credit card company. If you have a receipt thst shows zero that's what I would do.
