Airlines with 2 seat configuration in Economy

Hi everyone,

Due to reasons I wont go into on here, we need to travel on aircraft with a 2 seat configuration in economy(with as much leg room as possible).

We usually travel from Dublin but are not averse to going to MCO or Sanford via Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester.

So far, I have found aer lingus do the DUB- MCO route direct but it is costly.

Delta appear to have indirect flights from Dublin via JFK and/or via Atlanta on a Boeing 747-400, which appears to have the seat configuration we need.

Does anyone know of any other routes we can consider. Now that we have to pay for bags etc , the flights from ireland are proving to be quite expensive (pre-clearance i suspect has a lot to do with this too) .

Many Thanks

Virgin also have 2-4-2 at the back of the plane. We always book these as we prefer 2’s.

With BA from LGW, it will depend on the aircraft. The refurbished 777s have the most rows with 2-4-2 in economy (3 rows at the back), the unrefurbished ones (fewer of them as time goes by) have fewer 2-4-2 rows.

OP - BA’s 747s also have 3 rows of 2-4-2 at the back, with some having a row of 2-4-2 further forward at exit rows (so higher cost to reserve, if you have to pay, and if your reason for needing them is health based (not prying, just informing), you may be disqualified from exit rows). However, 747s only operate from LHR, and that would mean 2 connections if you’re starting from DUB (LHR and a US gateway such as JFK, Miami, Chicago or Dallas) where the 747 operates.

A380 routes on BA are also a possibility, all the economy rows upstairs are 2-4-2, the same caveat about 2 connections would apply. BA only operates 777s to MCO, all from LGW.

Other possible considerations, Lufthansa and KLM may also operate 747s to MCO via Frankfurt and Amsterdam respectively, though not familiar with their seat plans.

If you can get the price and schedule you want on Delta from DUB, that’s probably the way to go, but of course in all cases be wary of aircraft type changes, especially if booking far in advance. This can scupper your plans, and you would have no recourse with airlines beyond a possible refund of seat reservation costs.

Edited at 12:36 AM.

I don’t think any 747s go to the US from Dub so double check that info.
Try using google flights for prices and then going to the airlines official site for the seat plan.

Hi Lesley, VA's A330 has a 2 x 4 x 2 seat config and fly Man to Atl (or JFK) to MCO (we like the Man/Atl route into RSW). Perhaps check airline layouts on SeatGuru. VA operate 747's from Man and LGW with a 3 x 4 x 3 config with four rows at the very back of 2 x 4 x 2. Whilst you can purchase code share aboard VA via Delta's website, to my knowledge Delta don't operate any 747's.

Hope you're as well as can be Lesley

A good point, and as I think about it, I don’t think any US carriers are operating passenger 747s any longer.

However, looks like Delta is operating 767-400s on the DUB-ATL and DUB-JFK routes currently, and these are 2-3-2 in economy. This can of course vary by season and as mentioned above, equipment swaps can happen. Check when booking and hope for no changes.

Can you manage a short flight in a row of 3? All of our 'long' indirect flights have been 2 4 2. Delta, US, American, BA, Austrian, Swiss.
