Found this on the KLM website. I would use this as evidence to support a claim via your credit card. By cancelling the flight KLM are in breach of contract.

I think that the EU has relaxed the rule about returning money and airlines and travel agents are not under that rule currently

Not yet for airlines. The European Commission has relaxed the refund deadline for the Package Travel Directive, relating to sales of packages by tour operators, but the UK government has not yet endorsed this. Nevertheless, many airlines and tour operators are unwilling/unable to comply with refund deadlines.

A company I’ve made a mental note of never to use. They cannot retrospectively introduce new terms, there’s a small matter of contractual incorporation to deal with.

I’m having the same problem with Lufthansa, we were due to fly to Canada today but they are only issuing vouchers and will only speak to you if you are wanting to travel in the next three days. The only other time that we could travel is the last week in August, so I priced up the flights with them and it’s £850 each, we paid £440 each. We can’t afford the difference so want a refund so that we can travel next easter, their vouchers are only valid until the end of this year.
I called Amex last night and they said to claim on my insurance, I said I wanted to put a section 75 claim in too as I can’t get through to Lufthansa and I don’t think my insurance will pay out until I’ve done this. So I’m going to try with the section 75 first, if I can’t get it back this way is my next move insurance or small claims court?

The EU appear to have announced that refunds are not compulsory in the current circumstances

Ah yeah, skimmed too fast. Looks like airlines have asked for that but not yet agreed.
