Hyundai Ioniq 5 - anybody got one?

Thinking of going to take a look and test drive one.

Would love to hear what people think of them.

We currently have an Audi Q7 which is a lovely car but really electric would suit us much better.

Dh has been looking for months but not happy with most of the offerings, he thinks there will be much better on offer in a year or so.

So that’s got us thinking about getting a stop gap car that we probably won’t keep too long, but we still want a decent car for that period.

Probably sounds rather daft as we could just keep our existing car until we decide what we want, but at just two years old it’s worth more than we paid for it so it seems a good time to take advantage of that. Also the petrol costs are astronomical! I get about 200 miles from the tank, that costs £100 to fill 😱 hence the move to electric.

Fuel costs may drop.

No way I would part with Q7.
Value could still go up.
Might be worth even more next year.

I’m 3 months into driving an EV and loving it (BMW IX3). The Ioniq 5 wasn’t available at the time I ordered but I’m not sure I’d have opted for it as I’m not a huge fan of its looks. That said it is, by many accounts a great car.

I guess it depends on your priority for wanting to change. If it’s down to the costs of running then I’m not sure it’s a particularly difficult decision based on the figures you’ve mentioned. Roughly speaking my monthly cost for charging is about the same as it cost me to fill up completely in my old car (Range Rover Evoque), which I’d probably have done about 3 times in a month (that would do approx 400 miles per tank).

Ioniq 5 has a claimed range of 300 miles - you won’t get that, but should have no problem getting over 200 on a full charge (I’m averaging around 220-230 on the IX3 which has a similar sized battery and according to most reviews the Ioniq 5 is more efficient). Don’t know what your electricity tariff is, but mine is approx 20p per kWh and a full charge costs me approx £15-16. So you’d definitely be quids in from that point of view.

If the main reason is purely just to change the car then I’m not sure it’s quite as compelling an argument to give up the Audi!

We rarely keep a car more than two years, so it’s both running costs and a desire to change really.

Dh is quite taken by the Porsche Taycan but it’s too low for me, we got rid of our Audi A5 after 18 months because it was killing my back getting in and out.

I think he’d like to wait for the Porsche Macan so we may well end up doing that but I think we’d need to order now and we can’t lock in the price of ours doing that.

We were told at the Audi dealership that they wouldn’t guarantee a price on our car if we ordered with them as they can’t even give an estimated delivery date (that’s for an etron) they suggested chopping it in for a cheap second hand car to lock in the profit but I don’t want to do that.

Best to shift the Q7 now whilst the market is crazy, the prices will only go one way!
There was a recent TV programme on Quest I think Fifth Gear Recharged where they took the Hyundai on the North Coast 500 run around the top of Scotland. Quite interesting and gives a decent review on the car. Might be able to get it on 'catch up'.

Other thing worth looking at (if it’s applicable) is whether your employer offers a salary sacrifice leasing scheme - very cost effective way of leasing an EV if so due to tax/NI savings.

Sadly not, dh asked his hr dept if it’s something they’re considering and was told no.

Shame as being a higher rate tax payer would have given a substantial discount.

Some leasing companies have special discounts depending on where you work such as NHS.

Just a random example.

selectcarleasing/n...iscount-scheme

Thanks, unfortunately we’re not eligible for any discounts I’ve seen.

Dh works in fund management and I’m not working so we rarely qualify for anything.
