I had a large (tennis ball size) ovarian cyst removed in 2016. It was spotted during the emergency caesarean with my son, I had no idea it was there previously! It was removed laparoscopically but they did have to remove the ovary too. I had completed my family already though and informed them I was OK with this happening, possibly they would have tried harder to save it otherwise. The recovery was a little rougher than I expected, I'd say 2 weeks before the pain completely stopped then another 2 before I felt fully back to normal. I did have 3 small children though so probably didn't take it easy as much as I should have! All the best to your daughter, I'm sure the procedure will go smoothly for her.

Just a last update, my daughter had her surgery yesterday.
The consultant was very happy how it went, he was able to do it keyhole which obviously is much better for her recovery time, and he also was able to save her ovary ❤️ She was in a lot of pain overnight, but was discharged this morning home and is now resting in bed. For the surgery and appointments/scans etc it ended up costing us just short of £7000, so more than we had originally been quoted, but definitely worth it for our peace of mind. Thanks again to everyone for their best wishes and thoughts x |

Wonderful news. What a relief for you all. Just thought I should mention for anyone else reading that the cysts in PCOS are not the same as large cysts that can burst or need surgical removal. PCOS causes lots of small cysts on the ovaries when follicles grow but don't always release the egg inside. Having both types of cysts is definitely unlucky.
Also for anyone worried about fertility after having an ovary removed, my sister in law's mother had her fourth child with only 1/2 an ovary left and not even actively trying to get pregnant!
