This is really good advice. Unless you know this friend and his wife really, really, really well I wouldn’t do the legwork for them and book anything. Maybe send them a few links, tell them to come here and buy the Brit Guide.

I’m reading he asked you how much it was as opposed to plan it for me...

I always give out our ball park figure. I stress it includes EVERTHING from flights to park tickets, (free) food to insurance, spending money to night before hotel and car parking/train costs.

I follow up with it can cost a lot more, and a lot less. What they then do with the information is up to them.

Really is how long is a piece of string type of question. Which should also be answered with a "warning" that this will be an annual cost not a once in a lifetime cost 😂😂
The prices can vary enormously depending on what you want, and what your expectations are, also with our visits to Florida I find the price escalates the more I research and read on the dibb with must do experiences etc.

Just an update - he has booked a package through TUI which is all inclusive of tickets etc - staying on I-drive.

He is happy with it but as a planner and DIYer I had to keep the 'how much you could have saved' thoughts to myself lol.

Thank you all for your advice x

for some people its worth the extra money so they dont have to think about anything - its all taken care of.

Personally thats not for me, I want the best bargains possible but each to their own!

Curiously, how much did he end up paying all in?

Package holidays can cost less. There have been several times in the past when we've booked a package holiday and I haven't found anything cheaper doing it myself. And I've also priced up things separately looking for the cheapest offer and taken that into a TA and asked them to match it.

This is for like-for-like comparison. Sure, you can book cheaper indirect flights instead of the direct flights in the package and save some money. Or swap to a different date outside the holidays which will be cheaper and save that way. Etc.

Of course, a package holiday can also be more expensive as well.

As long as he’s happy you’ve done your job in helping him .

When asked the dreaded question I tend to rely on "Whatever you think it might cost, double it, then be prepared to add more on top".

I usually add on something about, "Don't be conned by the glossy tv ads - you will be aching, hot, sweaty, grumpy, unimpressed, confused and full of regret by Day 3. And then you will rebook a week after returning home".
