The code is to allow access to endorsements, US renters don't even bother with our endorsements so there will in all likely be no issues. That said better having a code and not needing it than not having one but needing it.

Another shambles
I just wish someone somewhere would sit down in their highly expensive office and just think about the actual practicalities of all of this. Would it not be easier to bar Code or QR code every plastic licence and be done with it - they will then contain all the info that our passports should contain. Life is a barcode! - only if it gets me straight to the garage though

This is the article Kinky Boots is refering to,I think it sums it all up.Nice work Kinky Boots
UK Driving Licence Counterpart No Longer Required From June 8th 2015 the paper counterpart of a UK photo ID driving licence ceases to have legal status. A UK driving licence will be either a paper licence issued prior to 1998 - pink or green it doesn't matter - or just the photo ID licence which is renewable every 10 years. This will be all you will need to collect your hired car from 8th June onwards. There is some on-line discussion of the need to obtain a code from the DVLA to hire a car. This is not necessary to hire a car in the USA. The DVLA website specifically says: "After 8 June 2015 if you are hiring a vehicle or you drive for a living and you are asked to provide evidence of your driving record (entitlements and/or penalty points), you will be able to do this online for free by accessing our Share Driving Licence service." It is important to be aware that hire companies in the USA do not recognise our system of points and endorsements - as long as you are not banned from driving you can hire in the US. We have already checked with our suppliers (Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Fox, National & Thrifty) and we have been assured that whatever passes for a valid UK driving licence is what will be required in the USA. We also know from anecdotal evidence (including our own experience) that drivers with a photo ID are rarely asked to present their paper counterpart. If you are particularly cautious or travelling around the changeover date and want to be absolutely certain of no problems, then you can log on to the DVLA website and follow instructions to print out a pdf copy of your driving history, and even obtain a passcode for the car hire company to access your record online. Legally, you will still need to present the paper counterpart to collect your rental if you are collecting before June 8th as until that date the full UK driving licence is comprised of both the photo card and the counterpart.

Not quite accurate. They keep referring to "UK". Northern Ireland is part of the UK and this doesn't apply at all. Why cant they get it right! Basic geography.
Not getting at you at all as this is an excellent piece of information. Thanks you. I just get annoyed when people just forget about NI or are ignorant about our country. |
