We take advantage of the Restaurant.com vouchers. Usually choose them outside the tourist corridor and explore the surrounding area at the same time. Most servers and other customers are tickled pink by us being there! Belly Buster Bobs at Flagler Beach actually dug out some tea for us and gave us huge take away cups and a cookie!

I've lived in Orlando for 12 years and work in the food industry and can count the number of times we've had poor service on one finger (Sam Snead's in Metrowest..server was more interested in talking to his friends at another table) We've had servers that have been overloaded with tables and may not have been attentive as usual, but still did a good job. We rarely eat in the 'tourist' areas so there could be a difference in level of service there.

I completely agree with all of this... Been to Florida more times than I can count, and as a nosey child I used to be astounded by the measly tips left by a lot of Americans (After being quite demanding diners too) compared to what us and other Brits were leaving on the tables.

Interested to know which restaurants the OP has eaten in where the service has been bad. In more than 25 trips to the US, over 14 years, I have never had truly bad service. The vast majority of times the service is very good. There are certain places where I think the service is definitely more 'abrupt' than others, though, so I am just intrigued to know whether it is the places that I tend to think about having the more abrupt service, rather than rude as such.

To me while “brits” on sites like these are proudly posting saying 20% is the “norm” and they always tip 20% or more,American wait staff will know this and devote the time and attention to the tables with American guests where they need to earn the tips they get, we’ve holidayed with our American friends who are very generous and giving people and they certainly don’t see 20% as either the norm or that it should be left no matter how the service has been. Personally I think it’s time we all woke up to the fact that it’s a tip for good service and only that, if you get good service tip if not don’t,it’s up to the servers then how much they get,if I wasn’t doing my job right I wouldn’t last very long why should the servers be any different?

I agree the service is middling at best. Here is a TS review of our last trip (we hardly ate any TS in WDW this year, Chili's etc was when we were in St Augustine):
1) Beaches and Cream, pleasant service, friendly waiter. What I'd expect in the UK. Nothing stellar. 2) Yak and Yeti- Truly awful service. Sat down and first interaction with waiter 10 mins later, when he shot past saying he'd be back soon. Seemed to be concentrating on large tables of Americans. When bill came told him we had Landry's card, at which point he became borderline aggressive and said 'Thats why I asked you if you had Landry's card'. He hadn't. Manager came over and I complained about him. Gave him $6, wish now I'd given him nothing. Entitled attitude, must be earning a fortune in tips. Some of worst service I've had. 3) The Plaza, downright weird male server who was miserable as sin and curt. Again seemed to have an entitlement attitude, on big tips. Was at least quick and to the point. Zero conversation. 4) Mellow Mushroom Pizza- pleasant enough girl, average service. 5) Chilis- Nice lady. Food slow coming out and was cold, had to be sent back and replaced. No comps. Not her fault and meal good value so gave 15% 6) Outback- server was fine, again nothing you wouldn't expect in UK. 7) Rainforest Cafe at AKL- Brilliant server. Kids (11, 14) ordered kids meals. She said she'd give them full sized drinks no charge. Recommended good beer. Really pleasant and attentive. Chased up meals (which are brought out by others here). Constantly topped up sodas. Very chatty. One of best servers I've had anywhere in quite a while, left her over 20% So some of it was just average at best, one downright awful, one had a wierd extremely curt type serving us (not the first time at Disney we had another like that at Hollywood and Vine last time we went) and one was brilliant. I think I'd have overall received better service in the UK. So tipping in my view doesn't improve service. Also the expectation of 20% etc has in my view caused an entitlement attitude (particularly in Disney) and degradation of service. Edited at 09:49 AM. |

I wouldn't say we had poor service but nothing outstanding. Most meals felt very rushed, Olive Garden was the only place we didn't feel rushed and really enjoyed our evening there. And as a consequence drank more & spent more!
We concluded that maybe in the US they want their food asap where as we like to make an evening of it if we're spending a lot on food. For this reason we tended to opt for qs. I guess it's another cultural thing. We did get challenged at Ihop for tipping too little - it was about 50c less than 20% hubby rounded down instead of up. Made us feel pretty bad.

Lots of comments already so mine is brief.
UK service 5 out of 10 USA service 9 out of 10 That's based on 42 years of multiple annual trips to the States and eaten all over the country apart from the Mid West.
