I understand your point. More money for everyone is definitely better, but the whole reason people tip in the first place is because of their low pay.
If they were earning loads of money, the tip wouldn't be necessary.
But I will be tipping and understand there's loads of things behind the scene that go on and it is a completely different culture to ours.

I wouldn't worry about the hotel. I went there several years back and had no problem whatsoever and they were very helpful. In a very good area too. It's not the best hotel by any stretch, but It's good for the price. I hope its good this time

Comparing a server requiring next to no training or qualifications to a surgeon is like comparing a rusty push bike to a brand new Ferrari 458.

I hope so too.
Never been to this specific hotel but been on I drive loads not since 10years ago too.
Out dated decor doesn’t bother me and I know it’s not a 5star hotel I wouldn’t want a really posh one anyway as I don’t like things too formal.

Just want it to be all clean etc.

MH you appear to have completely missed the point, at some point on a "Tipping" thread the amount that a server makes raises it's head, why is this relevant? How much someone makes or doesn't make should in no way be tied to how much anyone tips, personally I tip a minimum of 18% but I also think that it's getting out of hand, a poster recently said that they had been to NY & their receipt had 18%/20%/25% I'm not sure how much influence a particular server has on the recommended amounts but being cynical I'd guess that Disney, for example, use it when negotiating their contracts. Almost like Disney is where all servers aspire to work so that they can be Millionaires!

There's one aspect of tipping I'm unsure of and I'd like advice on.
Specifically Golden Corral and CiCis Pizza - Both places you pay on entry and eat all you can.
What's the etiquette in these establisments? It really confuses me!

A lot of people doing Housekeeping roles have little English. It may be that they couldn't read the envelopes hence didn't take them.
High risk for them to take something if they aren't 100% certain it's for them.

I just leave cash on the kitchen worktop with a scribbled note on top of it - ''Housekeeping, thank you''.

Alawys taken - just wish they could clean properly as well!
