Apparently the rules changed in October 2018. This is what I've been told by others. So if you had an ESTA applied for before October 2018 it's fine, if after this it must include middle names.

I've made the costly and time consuming mistake doing all of my family's without middle names, so I've just reapplied again... and thankfully they've been approved.

Interesting. Do you know when it changed? I did mine at the start and was all ok and approved.

No, sorry. I've literally just read about it on a Facebook group and everyone's panicking! The official advice from phoning up is you need a new ESTA but I'm not 100% convinced. For the sake of $14 each I've just re-done mine for peace of mind.

I applied for ours in Oct so just checked it has middle names on and as I took a photo of the passports, it’s inputted the correct details in the spaces. My daughters which I inputted details myself before the taking a photo was avaliable and hasn’t got her middle name so I’ve just replied as was running out anyway!

I did my sons the other night with no middle name & it was approved? Do I need to re-do it? I wasn’t aware there was a change in October, I’ll be travelling on mine from last year which also doesn’t have a middle name.

I’m not totally sure but people are being told by the officials that it needs to be redone if you’ve applied since Oct and has no middle name on! When you applied for your sons did you upload a photo? That adds all the correct details needed( which is on the codes at the bottom of the passport page).

I have googled and I can see nothing about any changes back in August or anything official.

found this

Double check that everything is spelled correctly, and be extra certain that the way you have written your name matches how it is written in your passport. For example, if your middle name is written on your passport, you need to include your middle name on your ESTA application.
