It's certainly not usual to ask for the security deposit at the initial booking stage.

Personally I think it's unreasonable to have your $500 cheque for that amount of time, but it may be amongst their T&Cs as these can vary from owner to owner.

Bear in mind Christine's points too, if they want to send you a cheque back for the refund it can be cashed here in the UK but apart from the difference in exchange rates you will have to pay another charge to the bank here.

Hi

You also need to remember that when you get your dollars from the bank you will be getting their 'buy rate' and when you pay the deposit back in you will be getting there 'sell rate'.

These two amounts could be as high as 15c difference (which will be about 7.5%), and then you will pay bank charges for the privilege of paying the check in too.

I think you need to assume you will lose some money on the deal unless the dollar weakens quite a bit more.

Speedway,

I know of several US owners who ask for the security (breakage) deposit (which secures the booking) with the booking form and then the full rental money before the travel date.

This is just like us asking for a deposit (to secure the booking) and then asking for the balance of the rental money plus the security (breakage) deposit before the travel date.

Hope that makes sense.

Where can you take a personal dollar cheque to get cashed in this country please?

Christine

It does seem strange to have to pay then the security deposit so far in advance we ask for it to be paid with the rental balance.

We accept payment in $'s or £'s as the others have said with the security deposit in the same currency as the full payment. I usually return $ security deposits paid by US residents by US cheque from our US bank account and for anyone else I offer a US $ cheque or a bank transfer through xe . com at the prevailing rate. Up to now my european guests have all opted for the bank transfer, except for Irish guests who seem to have no problem cashing US cheques.

you can pay a dollar cheque into your own bank account, it takes longer to clear, and the exchange rate is never good

As I understood it, although I don't think the OP was too sure herself, she needed to send a deposit plus the security deposit - my opinion is that it shouldn't be necessary to have both at the initial stage, although obviously some owners T&Cs are different as I mentioned.

I worked in banking for many years although in a building society. When we received a personal cheque in a foreign currency we could accept it, but as we weren't one of the four biggest banks at that time we had to go through their banking system first. It took time and cost money but it could be done. I would imagine things are even easier now.

Hi Jill

I understood it to be the security deposit now and the full balance at the end. Totally agree that she shouldnt need to send both now! I would give it a wide berth if I had to pay a deposit plus the security deposit now - absolutely no need for both. Think she needs to check back with the owner dont you?

Thats worth knowing about a foreign currency personal cheque - I didnt know that. Thanks

Christine

Just to say thanks for all the help we are going to contact owners as to how they refund the money back.

It is just the $500 security depoist to pay now.
No other deposit at this stage
Sorry if i confused people but i was in a muddle
We then pay the full balance 1 month before .
