Four Points on a Fat Boy - August 2012 - Day 1

Four Points on a Fat Boy – Wednesday 1st – Saturday 11th August 2012

Cast members:

Me – Alanda – riding bikes for nearly 20 years now, but enjoying being pillion on this trip. Current bike is Harley Davidson 883 Sportster.
DH – Wiggy – riding bikes since just after he could walk I think - say over 35 years! Current bike Harley Davidson Fat Boy.

This trip has been long contemplated by DH on and off for years. So when our 2 lads decided they would holiday without us this year (one in Cyprus and one in the US – both staying with school friends who have moved to different countries in the past year), we decided it would be the ideal time for a road trip. The four points we wanted to reach were Land’s End (West), Lizard Point (South), Lowestoft Ness (East) and Dunnet Head (North), and of course, John O’Groats while we were up in Scotland so we could do LEJOG too!

The planning took us months – pouring over routes, trying to avoid motorways as much as possible, while taking in some sights that we both wanted to see and riding some good biking roads.

So, having made sure the boys had reached their respective destinations safely, we packed up the bike and headed off on 1st August. See how clean the Fat boy is here?

Day 1. Warrington – Peasedown St. John 200 miles

We headed out on the A49 towards Shrewsbury through Stockton Heath towards Telford, where we made our first stop in Ironbridge, which neither of us had ever seen.

This was a whistle-stop tour, so having taken some photos, we were soon on our way again taking in the small villages of Much Wenlock and Church Stretton before stopping for lunch at the OK Diner just outside Leominster.

We tried to skirt around Hereford but still got caught in a lot of traffic, so a place to avoid in future! Onwards, through Monmouthshire passing Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle and hitting our first torrential downpour of the trip, on our way to the old Severn Bridge.

Some photos are a bit blurry because they are taken from the back of the bike

We hadn’t realised there was 2 Severn Bridges until my brother-in-law told us later that night, although we could see the other one in the distance. We had made good time to here so decided to stop at Riders of Bristol, where we found the service department quite unhelpful, but the dealer t-shirts cheap, so bought 2 of those and carried on to our first overnight destination.

I know Peasedown St. John sounds like a very wet place (hereafter referred to as PSJ) but it’s where my sister lives and is just outside Bath, so made a good stopping point for our first night.

DH loves his Fat Boy. Matt Black - needs careful washing, so I am not entrusted with that job, thankfully

I don't know why you can't see the pics. I can see them OK - maybe someone with more technical knowledge can provide an answer.

I'm only learning how to post photos, so maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I've only just seen your reply, sorry I can see your pics now Really enjoying your trip report, it's giving us loads of ideas of where we can go on the bike.

I dont drive at all but my fiancé has a Suzuki Gladius. He only passed his test about a year ago and due to the bad weather up here we haven't managed to get out much on it. I didn't think I would actually miss it as much as I have but I cant wait for a dry day so we can start getting back out on the bike.

He would probably give a leg for a fat boy though, it's his absolute favourite!

The scenery in your photos throughout the days is breathtaking

So you got caught in our famous traffic, Hereford is never without traffic jams, at whatever time of day you drive through. It's so much fun sitting in it!
