Better to fly in and out of one airport or in one out another?!
Ok - so getting nowhere fast. So should I fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka (or vice versa) or in and out of Tokyo and travel back and forth? I see a few people have done this.
Thank you

We are flying in and out of Tokyo but we will have the JR Rail Pass which will cover nearly all our rail travel. It all depends on what you want to do while you are there. We will be doing day trips from Tokyo and also from Kyoto so the pass will be worth it for us and the trip back to Tokyo is only a couple of hours anyway and we will finish our holiday with a couple of more days there.
When I priced flying into Tokyo and returning from Osaka it was more expensive for us. If you have an itinerary you could calculate the cost savings on the undernoted railpass calculator to see if it pays to buy one or it works out cheaper flying in and out of different airports. japan-guide/railpass/ Edited at 07:25 PM. |

We are looking into doing this, flying into one and then out of the other. I just think it will work better with our itinerary, as we want to make our way from one to the other and visit surrounding areas.

Thanks for this. Do you know if its cheaper to buy rail tickets in advance? Or can you get on day? I need to firm up what we are doing. Then I can see if worth getting railcard. At the moment calculator saying for 14 day pass doesn't pay off. But have only put in three journeys. Does railcard include local travel in all cities? Hmmm. Sorry lots of questions!

The JR rail pass is only available to buy before you enter Japan (although I did read somewhere it is possible for tourist to buy on arrival at a higher cost). You can use the pass to travel around Tokyo on the Yamanote line, the Shinkansen trains, NEX from airport and various other lines including travel within Hiroshima etc. (Can use it on the boat across to the island). It doesnt cover the underground in the cities.
We are planning day trips to Nikko. Hakone, Nara, Himeji and Hiroshima with our base in a Tokyo and Kyoto so its worthwhile for us. I have no idea on booking rail travel ad hoc though as I have never looked into that as we wont need it. |

No bother - if you do decide on the rail pass you should only buy it within 3 months of going and not before that.
There is a website called Hyperdia which gives you info on individual rail journeys for times etc. but I am not sure if it gives you the cost as I havent had time to look into it yet. hyperdia/# |

our trip is into Narita (disney) -> Kyoto -> Osaka -> Tokyo -> out of Haneda. We plan on using a 7day JR pass midway through the trip (basically to cover the middle section) and a Pasmo each for Tokyo. flights didnt seem to cost more or less having different airports.
Hyperdia does give you the cost but make sure you add up correctly as the cost is sometimes ticket+seat booking (for example bullet trains). Dont forget that the JR pass does not cover the fastest bullet train (and can be configured to not show you the faster train). Edited at 01:44 PM. |
