Krakow recommends...
off in 6 weeks on a jet2 city break
not been before or indeed to Poland anyone got any recommendations for stuff to do eat drink etc going to Auschwitz on the sunday, dont think we will have time for the salt mines & the mrs gets claustrophobic so maybe not the best idea anyway eats/drinks wise not looking for fine dining , but what we would call decent gastropub style food if that makes sense. keen to try some beers love an IPA/APA but not sure its a thing out there tia |

We used Prime Tours and went to Auschwitz and the Salt Mines on the same day. It was a long day but we didn’t want to miss out! The mines are huge and there’s one chamber called the cathedral, so I don’t remember it being at all claustrophobic so your wife may be ok.
We spent a lot of time wandering around the central areas and visited Wawel Castle, Schindler’s factory etc. There are lots of walking tours which leave from the main square every day and these can be excellent value though we didn’t have time to try them - will do next time though! As for food, there are loads of cafes around the main square and we fell in love with pierogi (filled dumplings) which were always pretty cheap. There is a lot of choice and we found our whole trip to be really good value. |

Schindlers Factory and the Jewish Quarter were really interesting. We self toured the Jewish Quarter but really wish we'd done a guided tour.
Food wise, I'm not much help as I can't remember where we ate, apart from the Hard Rock Cafe for lunch and an Indian restaurant which was one street back from the main square (really cheap and really good).

Have been to Kraków a few times with work. Food is generally inexpensive but you will pay slightly more in the main square - however if the weather is ok, it’s lovely to sit outside enjoying your meal. Most restaurants on the square have outdoor areas.
In the Jewish quarter we liked Warsztat (huge portions of Italian food) and Kolanko no. 6. There is also an old tobacco factory complex which is interesting - we ate at Międzymiastowa there (2 for 1 on G&Ts didn’t hurt) but you can see everything on offer there here. Might meet your beer interest! inyourpocket/krakow/...-centre_74446f We usually stay in a hotel near the main square area and walked to all of the above.

If you are looking for a fab burger try Moaburger which is just off the main square. Its basic but the burgers are amazing (and cheap).
In terms of beer there is a trip advisor thread on real ales in Krakow. I wouldn't say the Salt Mines are claustrophobic but personally wouldn't do them on the same trip as Auschwitz as it makes for a seriously tiring day. |

Thanks for recommendations will have a google, especially the beers !
ref the salt mines as above could make for a very long day coupled with i assume a lift/tunnel to get to the larger areas probably rules them out, my mrs gets freaked out gringotts waiting for the drop in the dark & avoids lifts if at all possible prefering the stairs, just to add some context |

I wouldn't recommend the Salt Mines on the same day as Auschwitz. We did this when we went and was so blown away by Auschwitz and Birkenau that I really didn't appreciate the sale mines as my brain just couldn't take any more.

I would say do Auschwitz and the Salt Mines on separate days. The Salt Mines aren’t claustrophobic, very big with lots of open areas, quite amazing actually.
We ate a few evenings at Sioux, I. The square, whilst not Polish, they did very good steaks and other foods. We had a fantastic time and are going again this coming December. |
