Airtrain and subway is so quick, cheap and easy but we have also used NYCAirporter when we have had a lot of luggage. Always found them to be great.

Ah.. We always travel light so Airtrain/Subway or Airtrain/LIRR. We've used taxis and airport transfers- limos or minivans. We have seen travellers carrying luggage or struggling with wheelies, making room on subway trains, or tackling stairs onto or from platforms. Especially if elevators are out of order. Maybe it's better to take a taxi if laden with luggage, probably when going home at least. We don't do shopping so not an issue. The other benefit of a taxi is it takes you (more or less) directly to or from your hotel. Subway stations may be a good walk away from where you are staying. Airport transfer minibuses may pick-up/drop-off at a dozen or more hotels. Airtrain is really easy, quick and cheap. |

We flew into Newark and took the train and subway which was $5 plus a weeks subway of $33 each and I think it may be roughly the same from JFK, train was fine but subway from Penn with 2 cases we were giving a not so warm welcome from a very unfriendly New Yorker to move them out the way and lifting them up the subway stairs and squeezing them through or over the gate was a challenge. On way back to JFK we decided to use 777 as recommended by our big apple greeter and was $89 including tip and well worth the comfort.

We’re here now and got a yellow taxi from JFK, it was easy to take from the taxi stand however I think we were unlucky as the taxi we were assigned had terrible air con and being stuck in the traffic at 32 deg C was not fun. I think the price to the hotel near Times Square was about $67 ( $52 plus tolls).
I’m looking to book a transfer for the return, it’s incredibly busy at the moment so don’t want to take public transport with all our cases so will look at the transfer companies suggested

Yellow cab easiest & least hassle if you have bags etc
door to door transport, no faffing about on trains/tube lugging bags, can be hit/miss on the age of the vehicle but a great start to a NYC break imo |

We used the air train to Jamaica and then used the subway to a station not too far from our hotel. We had a medium and a large case with us and it was fine. We would definitely do that again.

We are heading to NYC on New Years Day. 3 Adults + 2 kids (16 and 13). I've been twice before. The first time we got a shared shuttle which was a bit of a pain as it took over 2 hours from leaving JFK to drop us off (typically, we were last drop off). The second time we got a people carrier from Dial 7 which worked out not too bad.
Not sure this time what to do as private transfers are looking really expensive (not sure if it's to do with it being New Years Day). Would a cab from JFK be capable of taking 5 all with a large suitcase? |

We did cab the very first time, and that was mainly to a) have a ride in a yellow cab b) see the Manhattan skyline as you enter.
Airtrain and subway other times as it cheaper and quicker that via cab. We usually have one holdall each and a rucksack and its no issue using the public transport system. There are either lifts or escalators to use in pretty much most cases. Time of arrival would also be a consideration. If you are arriving late then a cab may be a good option as people will be tired and traffic less. |
