Which camera would suit me?

I have a DSLR which I enjoy using, but I find it too heavy and bulky when I go on my holidays to Shetland.

I usually take my compact digital but it’s not taking the photos I want it to take. Or perhaps I’m not the photographer I think I should be!

I really enjoy macro, wildlife and landscape photography. But I don’t want the weight or the faff of too many lenses. Is there a camera out there that would give me the photos so I can enjoy Shetland when I get home?

what dslr do you have? i have canon kit, so i bought the mirrorless EOS-M

compact sized body, slr quality and features. and with an adapter ring, i can use my EF-S lenses from my slr for those times when you need a bigger zoom or something a bit more specialist

I'd say a bridge camera would be perfect for you, with a long zoom - it really depends on the budget.

The best bridge I think I have seen is the Sony RX10 - but you need a Mk4 to get the 600 mm zoom lens - earlier versions have 200 mm zooms. It is very expensive, unless you are willing to buy a decent used one, but even then still expensive.

Next up would be the panasonics. FZ1000/2000. Have a look at this article

I have always had a soft spot for bridges and have owned Sony/Canon ones - but currently do no have one.
I had a Sony HX60V compact, 30x zoom, excellent but had no viewfinder. I now have a Sony RX100 compact, but limited in zoom capacity, Panasonic TZ100 might have been a better choice but still 10x zoom.

Compacts with long zooms I'd consider are Panasonic TZ80/90 or Sony HX90.

Good luck - I work in Shetland, lovely place and don't get time to go and appreciate the beautiful scenery.

I’ve got a Sony Alpha DSLR.

Are bridge cameras good for macro photography?
Thank you for your info. You’re lucky to be working in Shetland. I’ve just come home from a trip up. Saw the bearded seal but would have liked a longer zoom for close ups! I’m going back up next month so hopefully I have a new camera by then!

as far as i know sony have a mirrorless compact model available which you can probably use your existing lenses with. thats why i went with the canon eos m, i already had a good set of lenses, and i can use them on a body a third of the size of my EOS450 dslr

for day to day photography, i use the EOS-M (EF-M) lenses. i have a 20mm f2 wideangle and a 18-150mm zoom lens. but for proper wideangle stuff, macro or wildlife stuff, i use my big EF-S lenses

I think the RX10 would be very close to DSLR quality - but expensive camera - bridges are in general excellent camera's. Buy a 2nd hand FZ1000 from Ebay and try it out - if you don't like it - sell it again - won't cost that much.

RX10 is expensive - but see brand new one on Ebay from Ireland for £1409 delivered. I see the MK3 also has the 600 mm lens - so would be a cheaper option - again plenty on Ebay - you could buy, try then sell on again. But the bridges are not compact either.

The Sony HX90, Panasonic TZ80/90 might do what you want and are very compact.

I have an Olympus OMD which I love - the 12-50 lens has a macro button on it which helps with close ups. I also have a general 14-150 which I use as a day to day lens. It is a lot lighter than a DSLR. The Panasonic FZ2000 comes out well but it is so expensive.

Thank you everyone. Your advise is appreciated. I’m currently writing up a list of pluses and minuses for each camera!
