This year is my second time of doing it, in fact it's only my second time of flying since 1997! There is no best time to look - I just check every now and again.

Also look at the flat rate UC price and the difference from what you paid.
I did this (not an upgrade as such). I didn't even have an upgradable ticket and all I had to do was pay the difference. Well worth calling them.

Sorry to jump in...

When we booked, for the first few weeks I could go on the app and see the upgrade price and the bidding option. It was quite good seeing the price fluctuate.
For the last few months, all it shows at the top of the screen is how long until check in and the rest of the page is blank. Does this mean all PE and UC seats are booked? Thanks

Hi Jo, I believe it may imply they're either fully booked or, if they anticipate any remaining seats may yet sell, the bid option won't be available.

The seasoned VA Dibbers will likely explain further

Yup; this is my current plan.
I'm regularly checking on rewardflightfinder.com and have a search set up and stored.

Can I be cheeky and ask what are the seats like in UC when reclined as they are a bit hard to sleep on laying flat? We're flying to LAX in a year or so and are saving the miles to go UC.

They are about as comfortable as any of the seats on Virgin to be honest. They are deffo better just reclined rather than laying flat though.

Experiencing UC today for the first time and getting our money’s worth. We’re on the plane but take off is delayed at least 45 minutes due to a luggage loading issue.

Hiya RR - I can't use UC [hard] lie flat seats due to back issues, but plenty of other people do. If you like/need a softer mattress you may find the lie flat seat hard going. We reverted to PE as we prefer that seat.
