Sri Lanka experienced people...

We're out here for our summer holiday this year, we're staying on the West coast as a base but intend to explore with back packs, one of our plans is to do the Kandy - Ella train journey and stay in Ella for 1 or 2 nights.

Is it the kind of place you'd be happy rocking up to and choosing somewhere to stay or would you recommend planning this in advance?

Ideally I'd like to do the former, but have no idea if this is a sensible thing to do.

Thank you

We are heading to Sri Lanka this week. We have an itinerary all booked. Reading forums, I think I would at least book your accommodation, sounds as if there can be dodgy places.

TA has good guide on getting Train tickets which I believe can be difficult.

I'll ask our guide re would he recommend just booking as you go and get back to you

Thank you. We've read that it can be difficult to book the train tickets and they can't be booked online, it recommends booking them for mid week travel as soon as we arrive in the country.

I look forward to hearing all about your trip, have an amazing time - it looks beautiful out there, we're really looking forward to going.

I'll post an update when we have been. Its somewhere I have always really fancied visiting! Very excited!

We are just staying in three places as I am not a good traveller but if we enjoy it definitely plan to go back

There's some really useful info on train travel on seat61/
and on reddottours/

Red Dot also has lots of advice on accomodation. Enjoy the planning!
