Top trumps, colouring book and pencils, a travel book or print outs about travelling such as draw your aeroplane write or draw what you will be doing on holiday etc, new story book, Disney sticker book. Plus we always had drawing competition to see who drew the best car/dinosaur/doll/house etc .Game of tic-tac-toe, hangman (maybe bit young at 4) or snap. Travel Guess Who or similar.

We always tried to supply a mixture of things to do on her own and to play with us to pass the time.

My nephews like the scratch note pads. They are posit size and you get lots on a pack, you scratch the black surface to reveal the colour, very versatile and not too messy. You can get loads of different options on amazon.

We had the Usborne 50 things to do on a plane cards, and holiday doodles, they are wipe clean cards but kept our then 9 year old occupied. Not sure if they still do them but sure you would get similar. My daughter used to enjoy just a pad of paper and we would play hangman, or word association games, she also liked top trumps and uno etc.
