Travelling without a credit card

I want to book a hotel in cairns for a 2 night stay for ds. It will be paid in full at booking but the hotel want a card swipe on arrival .Ds won’t have a credit card ( he’s 18 ) and they are only taking a small amount of cash as the rest of the time they will be staying with my sister in Sydney so I will just transfer to her what they need while out there and she will give it them in Oz dollars .
Has anyone any experience of this especially with kids who have just turned 18? What did you do ?

Can they not use their debit card? We don’t have credit cards and we usually use one of our starling cards for hotels.

They do but we have no idea how much they need to be in the account . The hotels don’t actually tell you what the hold is. I don’t want to transfer £500 then them go and lose the card with the time difference .

would it not be prudent to have at least on CC for emergencies/covering hotel incidentals even if you never use it?

always good for the credit score to have at least one being used/paid off regular

They are only just turned 18 so unlikely to be accepted for one as they have no income being students . Getting access to funds isn’t a problem as they are staying with my sister for 18 nights in Sydney but they wanted to see the reef so are just having 2 nights in cairns ( my sister isn’t going ) to see the reef , it’s just the hotels needed a cc hold in case of damage.

Great news though , The hotel have got back to me and advised they can put a hold on mine with no problem . Excellent customer service and peace of mind for me .

My daughter has a credit card she got when 18 , purely to build up her credit score, my OH suggested she do it, I wasn’t so sure but she’s really sensible with it, puts petrol on it every couple of weeks and a few little bits and always settles it in full... last year though it got cloned and she completely freaked out... someone had bought a big tv from Tesco with it ... it did get sorted very quickly , she’s off to America in September I’m glad she has one just in case.

Meg got her first one with Tesco , got a smaller limit and built it up over time, she now has a credit card with better rates , not sure who with lol, at time she was still an apprentice so pretty crappy income.

Would they get one accepted with any means of income though ? They are both off to uni after college , no idea how all this works these days if I’m honest .

I don’t know Sam sorry, maybe one not with the best rates would be more likely too but as long as it’s still used only for emergencies and paid in full? Have a look on Martin Lewis website and do a search.

I never use a credit card, and travel everywhere with my debit card. Never had an issue
