There is NO WAY I would put any valuable stuff in the hold...always hand luggage. 🙂

You wouldn't be covered by travel insurance if laptop was in hold and it went missing or bag was lost

I don't tend to travel with a laptop on holiday, but I have a handful of times. I have usually put it in the hold, much to DH's annoyance.

Never ever put anything in the hold that has value to you. Thinks get stolen, luggage gets lost and things get broken.

Travelled many times with a laptop, it never goes in hold luggage - too much risk of it getting bashed around and/or getting lost. Much easier to just bring it along with me in my carry on.

I did a few years ago with an old laptop on the way home from Sanford. It was in the middle of the case wrapped in clothes. When we got home the laptop was on the top of the case all bashed with a cracked screen and had been turned on. There was a printout from customs advising the case had been opened for inspection.

I’m afraid that’s totally wrong. If fitted in appliance they are allowed in the hold.
See IATA sheet where it shows this. iata/whatwedo/cargo/...um-battery.pdf Hope this helps others. |

If the battery is removable you would have to remove it and carry the battery in your hand luggage, the rest of the laptop can then placed in the hold. If you have a non-removeable battery fitted, as in ipads etc, you should then be allowed to place it in the hold.
