Virgin Atlantic seat selection

In my booking it says choose seats from today, but there is a £30 charge for the outward flight. The return flight says the same but there is no reference number so we can pick a seat or so I can put the flight in the virgin app. That was supposed to appear today. When can you pick a seat without charge?

Is this for Economy Classic seats? If so, try the seats further back as the ones nearer the front may have a surcharge.

Yeah this is new for preferred seats on Virgin. Caught me out too! It’s £30 per person per way for most seats. The ones at the back are free. We booked these!

Ok, chosen free seats for going out but need the reference number to pop up for the return journey.

Is it Virgin Holidays? If the date given for seat selection is today it'll probably show in the next couple of hours with the same reference number as outgoing. The outgoing flight has probably been available to book seats for a while despite the date given by VH (2 weeks ago if you are staying 2 weeks).

When choosing the preferred seats, do they take payment then or at the airport? We chose our seats back in March (for free) but when checking last week, our seats appear to be in the preferred section, which we didn’t pay for. Will we be caught out and made to pay at the airport or not?

We chose our seats last week ,went for row 24,25 and had to pay £30 each return as they were at the front .we had to pay straight away

Did you have a consolidated flight? The free section may have been full after merging the two flights, so you've been moved into preferred. Because that was done by them as an operational change, you shouldn't be charged for it.
