Sewing newbie
Hi,
So my mother in law has gifted me her little sewing machine, as she has a bigger one now. I would like to have a go at making a quilt, but not sure where to start! What do I need? Other than the sewing machine. Thanks!

I used a tutorial from
youtube/c/MissouriQuiltCo And you either need a jelly roll or fat quarters depending on your pattern for fabric. Once you have the top made you can think about how you want to quilt it. |

I suggest if you are a novice at sewing starting with something smaller such as a cushion cover first. You could make a quilted cushion front as a good introduction. There are plenty tutorials available on YouTube for beginners.
In addition to fabric for top of quilt you will need wadding/batting, cutting mat, good scissors, decent thread, a rotary cutter and a quilting ruler as well as backing fabric and fabric for binding. If you buy pre-cut fabric then of course you won’t need all of the above items but long term you will if you take it further. Edit: I will add since you mention it is a little sewing machine to that check it is actually big enough to deal with quilting a large item. If it’s a standard size you will be okay but as I have learnt it is a tight squeeze rolling it up to fit into the machine to actually sew (hope you know what I mean). Edited at 03:57 PM. |

Thanks for the advice! I have no idea really haha. But I just signed up for a beginners sewing box, so I will give those ago first. Then if I want to carry on I will invest in something a little bigger!
