Best Western Island Palms

Hi all, I’m looking at hotels for west coast trip next year, this seems a very popular hotel for San Diego and it looks lovely, can anyone tell me what restaurants are nearby, mainly for breakfast really as we’ll be out for lunch and dinner, is there any walkable or do we need to drive?😀

The hotel offers breakfast but we went out each day so didn’t try it. You’re basically under 10 minutes drive from a huge number of options. We ate whilst out and about and never struggled to find a spot. There wasn’t really anywhere on Shelter Island itself that we tried.

Definitely - it’s a perfect location.

One place we really liked for breakfast was Richard Walker’s Pancake House in the Gaslamp Quarter. The baked pancakes were amazing!

I have stayed at the Island Palms and at Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn next door. Shelter Island is a great location- scenic, lots of restaurants close-by. The Island Palms has a nice restaurant on the property, and so does the Humphrey’s hotel. There are so many other restaurants within a quick drive of Shelter Island, too.

For breakfast, some of my favorite places are Fig Tree Cafe, Breakfast Republic and Swami’s Cafe. These are all in Point Loma, which is the community where Shelter Island is located and all within a 15 min or less drive from the Island Palms. There is a restaurant on Shelter Island called the Point Break Cafe, but I have found them to be hit or miss with quality. If you want to venture just a little further and go into downtown San Diego for breakfast, I would recommend Richard Walker’s Pancake House (always has a long wait, so go early before you get too hungry), Cafe 222, Brian’s 24, and if you want to try something a little quirky but cool there is a place called Morning Glory that I tried just before the Covid lockdown (it’s decorated in pink inside). For a casual breakfast, there is a small bakery on Shelter Island called Marvelous Muffins. They have a selection of pastries, donuts, bagels and breakfast sandwiches. It’s at the entrance into Shelter Island, so about a mile walk from the Island Palms. There is also a Denny’s in Point Loma, if you are more in the mood for very casual diner food.

For dinner and lunch, there are some good places I like on Shelter Island, such as the Brigantine (mainly seafood but they also have steaks), Ketch Grill and Taps and the Bali Hai (polynesian food, a bit expensive but has gorgeous views of the bay and downtown across the water, more of a casual fine dining place). Within a few minutes drive of Shelter Island are some other personal recommendations like Miguel’s Cocina (Mexican food), Pizza Nova, Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern, Corvette Diner (1950’s style diner with singing waiters- noisy place, but fun), Officine Buona Forchetta, and the Liberty Public Marketplace (big indoor space with several different food vendor stalls- there is a counter inside that makes the best empanadas).

These are but a “few” of my favorites that are close to Island Palms. I have lived in San Diego all my life and have done a lot of dining out, as you can tell 😄 So many places I have left to try too! San Diego is a real foodie town.
