Price to move holiday is almost 3X than my original cost

So we are due to pay the final balance on our Florida holiday on the 20th of may, 3 days after holidays are due to restart.
With all the restrictions and the prospect of expensive tests to go, I thought I would check how much ocean Florida would cost me to move it back a year.
My heart almost gave out when the price arrived..
No amendment fees but the airlines want an extra £850pp to move it to the same date !
I know flights would be more expensive next year, but I didn't think I would need to sell my house to afford to go.
So I'm kind of stuck between a rock and a hard plate, I could end spending a fortune on a holiday that won't be everything we want and a fortune in tests or we could lose around £2000 in deposits.
Starting to worry a little now.
Any advice would be great

I'd ask them how much it would be to change to say January 2022, with no intention of going then. When the 11 month date comes around (when all airlines will have the May 2022 prices available - June 2021) I would ring them again and change it again.

The chance of you going on the 20th May must be less than 20% so you should be due a full refund without doing anything.

It's the balance due date, not departure.

We have moved our August 21 holiday to same dates next year with Ocean Florida and only paid £63 pp extra. We are flying indirect though so that may account with the low increase. Hope you manage to sort your trip out :-)

It’s not the airlines charging an extra £850 pp for the flights it’s ocean Florida. Flights aren’t released for next August.

This is what charter travel tried to do to us, wanted another deposit and an extortionate amount to book for the year after. We decided to lose our deposit at that point. We knew our flights would be cancelled as it had been announced just not actioned on system but they wouldn't delay balance to allow us time. Won't ever use a TA like them again

Have you tried to get a price of same holiday but as a new booking, then challenge them about price difference?

Charter travel have let us postpone for a full year with the holiday exactly the same price, they have asked for a £90 pp fee so we jumped on it as they didn't account for 2 children will now be adult age for flights and 3 others will be adult age for park tickets so we have not lost out on the £90. I think we have come out better off especially with all general price increases from year to year.
