Decorating help for a novice

We have removed paper from one wall in our bedroom and don't really want to put paper on that wall as we are moving the bed to where previous owners.

Now under the paper is some flaking bits of paint. If we want to paper again do we need to seal etc? Or can we smooth over and re paper or paint?
The paint sealer is pricy and wondering if any cheap options we could use?

Not done much decorating before and. It's already tedious.
Thank you 😊

Remove all the paper, sand with 120 grade sandpaper, repaint the wall with a trade emulsion, dry over night, use a 10” spatula to skim over the walls with Easyfill which has a 30 minute drying time, don’t mix the filler too thick ( can get from B & Q) Dry overnight, keep repeating sand/ fill depending on how bad the wall is until you are happy with it then emulsion again.

Hopefully I have explained this ok, I don’t have a clue but husband is a decorator !

The problem you are going to face is Emulsion is very unforgiving regarding hiding imperfections. Yes it will cover any deep colours with a few coats but flaking, scratched or areas where the previous paint has come off is a nightmare.

For small areas you can get a good Trade filler and then glasspaper it to make it blend in.

As with all surfaces be it timber or walls always wrap the glass paper around a square piece of timber to keep it flat and not get hollows as you sand.

Invariably we would just re skim the whole wall. For a great job a whole room can be re skimmed in less than a day so circa £300 as that’s what most Tradesmen are now charging.

Thanks both. We have sanded the wall down but still some flaky paint so will
Try again it seems.

Am I actually going to have to pay attention for sand paper roughness to do it. 😂

In all honesty. If I had the budget I'd would have paid someone to do the lot. Can't say I'm enjoying painting and my hands are killing!

Plastering and skirting board replacement would also be ideal. But sadly even 1 day at £300 aint in the budget 😩 Yet anyway. We need patio doors replacing 😭

We also have a wall of paneling stuck on. I'd like to remove it but that would then require plastering. So it's staying 😭

It's a. Money pit and only so much we can do at the time.

We also have a money pit of a house -
had walls moving because of roof issues... that is fixed, but cracks everywhere... and no budget left!

Dd is currently redecorating her room so we are "teaching" her how to make things look nice. The cracks have been filled, sanded and the wall has had a primer/undercoat. It looks OKsh, but shes aware that fine cracks may reappear due to the nature of the issues.
So, she decided to line it. We've been showing her how (paste the wall lining paper is bloomin marvellous!) And now there is a blank canvas with an excellent surface for whatever paint she wants. And the noise/echo from painted walls has gone - she loves that
... I also prefer the softer sounds in a room with wallpaper.
Three days hard work for us amateurs, but it looks lovely.

Oh, and my tip would be to use paint pads for painting. So quick and easy.

There are unfortunately no ‘diy’s’ or shortcuts that I am aware of that will achieve good results. If the issue is widespread, then you will likely expend many hours whilst achieving results that will be unsatisfactory.

I don’t like spending money, but I would simply pay for it to be skimmed.

Ours is nothing like that. Just decorating more to our taste but some sloppy previous work makes it harder.

My mom has offered to re paper the wall which we may end up doing for ease.

The paint flaking is mainly a few little areas nothing huge.

However the cupboard I've been rubbing bicarb on to rod of the stink of raw dog treats is now peeling so will Need sorting.

I'm ok with it not being perfect as long as it looks OK. The expense of moving house and priority plastering is not one.
Were delaying our new sofa too so we can pay for patio doors to be replaced.

We may employ those for the fake panel mess. As roller won't fit and I don't fancy a brush 😂
