My preference is for his travel writings which are all light reading and humorous.

He's written some serious ones such as The Body, A Short History of Nearly Everything and one about Shakespeare. I found The Body totally detailed in bodily activity but a bit heavy going and not so light hearted as the rest.

Try anything about his travels first such as Road to Little Dribbling. He was born in Des Moines Iowa but lived in England for many years. He totally loves us Brits but relates our idiosyncrasies in a very amusing way.

Thank you! This is really helpful. I think I will start with ‘ Road to Little Dribbling’

I really enjoy Bill Bryson’s books - interesting and amusing.
He used to write a column for 5ge Mail on Sunday supplement - it’s was the highlight of my week.

Re holiday reading - I enjoy Anne Tyler books - very quirky characters and written in a very interesting way.

I love Milly Johnson, especially for this type of reading, her book ‘Here come the girls’ was set on a cruise and is brilliant!
I always try and buy her latest book for any holidays I have coming up.

I was just going to recommend anything by Milly Johnson, always so easy to read.

I especially love Here Come the Girls, every time we have a cruise coming up I read it again to get me in the mood 🤣

I believe that she is an avid cruiser as well, I’d love to meet her on a ship 🚢

I don't do deep and meaningful. It's got to be light hearted. I don't read that often but when I do, it's typically chick-lit, Mandy Baggott, Sophie Kinsella type material. I generally like stories set in a holiday type setting hence I've read alot of Mandy Baggott.

Thanks for asking this question. I’ve several new authors to try now. The bonus is most are available to download from my local library

Another vote for Milly Johnson. Elizabeth Noble is good too and many of Maeve Binchy’s are good
