I once got a '≈≈≈≈≈≈≈ british' comment off a NYC taxi driver after tipping him $20. I was so anxious after that! Had just arrived and was pretty clueless at the time. I'm not sure I've ever mastered it. I thought I was being generous at the time!

One thing to note with food, you should be tipping the before tax total. I never knew this for years and waiters always seemed to be really grateful even when I left a lower tip as the service wasn’t that good. 😂

As others have said most bills come with the suggested tips now and 20% is considered standard compared to 18% pre-pandemic (shakes fist at inflation).

For anything else I always have to check guides before coming across the situation as I can never remember and it is annoying as I don’t want to be rude.

The difference is pretty marginal unless you have a VERY big bill.

On a family eating out in a restaurant and running up a $100 bill, tax is under $6 of that. If you're tipping at 20%, that means the difference in the tip between pre-tax and post-tax is about a dollar. Yes, that's one dollar.

No server is going to be melting in front of your for an extra dollar.

Well obviously I just have a nice personality then as they always seemed so very thankful and overly so.

More likely they've served tip-shy Brits before so were delighted to get one who tipped more respectfully!

I’d have taken the $20 back and he’d have done without!

Same here. A $20 tip for a taxi seems fair to me.

I've never thought that to be honest.
For as long as I've had Uber it's always asked if you want to tip.
And long before Uber, I'd always tip the taxi driver too!

For those asking about Uber tips...

It does give you 3 amounts to choose from, but there is also an option to add your own tip and put any amount in you desire.

or to decline to tip at all it's you choice but the right thing to do is to Tip them and considering the cost saving vs a taxi I'm always happy to Tip

(just to say it's nice to see a tipping thread not get out of hand)
