Running Costs for a Hot Tub

I'm thinking about getting a hot tub for our patio. I'm looking at either an inflatable one or the rigid foam hot tubs from Wave Spas.

I know a number of Dibbers have a hot tub. Would you mind sharing your running costs, please? The uncertainty around this is the only thing putting me off.

Our electricity is 16.9p per kWh, which I think is a bit more than the UK.

My rate is about 18p per kwh so yours isn’t that bad.

With regards cost it depends how big the hot tub is, the outside temperature and how often you use it. For instance it would take quite some time for a 3kw heater to heat even an inflatable hot tub after it was filled with cold water, but I would guess around 12 hours (that’s purely a guess as there are various factors that come into play). If you then used it daily it shouldn’t take that long to heat up as the temperature won’t be tap cold, but if you only use it once a week in say average 19 degree temperatures then it will take longer to heat.

So if it took 12 hours to heat it would cost you £6 which isn’t that bad (one costa coffee and a cake).

Between £1 and £2 per day depending on how well the tub is insulated.

About £30 a month extra on electricity. Plus chemicals about £3- £5 a month. Buy chemicals + filters in bulk works out cheaper. Depends how often used and what temp it is kept at or ticking over at when not in use. We have Lazy-spa vegas, bought April 2020, runs from May to mid Sept, emptied and cleaned for storage over the winter. We filled it in May when we set it up and water is kept in excellent condition, we only top up to the water level, not had to empty and refill.

Costs more than the shops tell you it does!

Also costs more in winter, even with good insulation (or so we've found).

We do keep it on hot all the time though, as never know when we might want to go in.
