I need advice from a hairdresser

I’ve posted something similar before but asking for more help if possible
I’m looking for a new hairdresser and there are several to choose from near me. I don’t think I’m hard to please, but don’t seem able to communicate what I want very well

I have tried a new hairdresser three times now and she does my highlights really well, but each time I ask for layers to be put in (I have a lot of hair, to thin it out), shaping to frame my face and a choppy, wispy fringe.
She thins out the ends, does not frame it and I get a thinned out but straight fringe. In other words, I leave disappointed and with hair looking exactly the same as always. It’s not like I’ve known her for years and she’s sticking to something she’s always done.
Where am I going wrong please?
How do I say, I want something different, more choppy, lots of layers and definitely not a school girl fringe?

Tell her what you just said . Or find a pic you like.
My daughter is a hairdresser and does my hair.

I feel your pain! After 4 visits to my new hairdresser, I finally got what I wanted.

Do you tell her it's OK when she shows you the mirror? I sometimes ask my hairdresser to make some minor changes (softer fringe, a bit thinner on top) before I leave. She might think she is pleasing you if don't say something.

Yesterday I asked her twice to not leave my fringe straight and to shape it around my face a bit more, she trimmed the tiniest amounts off, I just felt that I was speaking the wrong language.
I used a lot of praise for the colour and didn’t really comment about the cut, it was almost 3 hours in and I just wanted to go by that point.
At the moment I’m undecided about giving her another chance or trying somewhere else.

Perhaps try somewhere new, and take a photo of what you are looking for.

My OH did that recently as he had grown long hair over lockdown and had no clue what to ask for. He took a picture with him and got exactly what he was after.

Sounds frustrating and time to try someone new. Do you have any local friends that can recommend someone else?

I feel for you as I’m in the same boat. I have a lot of hair which I have always kept short, but I always need to keep it thinned out on top and I would love to have a wispy fringe😀

From behind the chair! Photos really are a big help, they do give an idea of what the client is expecting her hair to look like. If you have a photo and it’s not quite right, you gave a point of reference to say ‘could you make the sides a bit more like that’ etc.
