Re-using Magic Bands

Our magic bands from 2018 are still showing as active on MDE so we plan to use them this August.

We have purchased a package which includes hotel and 14 day park ticket and I would like to do on-line check-in so we can go directly to our rooms on arrival and then head out to one of the parks.

Are new park tickets automatically assigned to the magic band showing on the MDE account and therefore be valid as from our arrival date, or do I need to stop by reception to get this done?

Yes, Magic Bands are linked to your account, not tickets so if you have active tickets and an active Magic Band on MDE they will both be linked so you can go straight to the parks or your room and tap your band to get in. However, the battery life of Magic Bands are only two years so if they are from 2018, there's a chance they aren't going to work.

My 2015 magic bands still show as active on my account but it's long dead. Plan to buy a new rechargeable Magic Band+ when I go this September.

How would we know if these are dead?

If we get to the park and find they dont work at the entry gates, can we show booking on iphone to get in so that we can buy new bands in the park. I'm sure they will have a better selection than the hotel. Also will the shop that sells them be able to link the new band with our tickets for us ?

We went in may and used our mb from 4 years ago and still got the pictures
The band's will work indefinitely like a credit or debit card would.
You can check in MDE if they are still active on your account

Go to mde app
Press the 3 lines at bottom left
Scroll down to my profile
Magic bands and cards
Select your magic bands and cards

Yes, you will just have to turn on Magic Mobile in the MDE app to be able to use your phone as your ticket and tap your phone on the reader like you would with Apple/Android pay.

Once you've bought your new Magic Band, go in to MDE > My Profile > MagicBands & Cards > Link MagicBand > Enter the number on the back of your MagicBand in to the app and press link. Very easy Just don't forget to unlink your old MagicBand.

Thanks for the instructions. I couldn't find an answer anywhere on Walt Disney World webpage. Also even less information on when the new Magicband+ is being released. I hope its not on the same timescale as the "soon" to be reinstated dining plans !

They should never die for scanning getting into the parks, room, rides etc. it’s RFID like a security door pass or credit card.
The battery that gives it far field communication via a low powered radio transmitter (so it auto picks you up on rides etc) dies after 1-2 years. No worries just scan for photos or some rides like Haunted Mansion let you scan a QR code on your phone and your mobile Bluetooth does the job instead.
I intend to keep using my Haunted Mansion band until it falls apart or is lost. I used it again at Xmas. Lost it on Summit Plummet but they retrieved it for me so it lives for another holiday if we go back Xmas 2023.
